Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 2 E 12 Initiate Self Destruct

Go To

Ryan is faced with a difficult decision that could expose her as Batwoman, creating a rift in the Bat Team. Meanwhile, Black Mask's plans for Kate Kane begin to unfold. Alice is reunited with someone from her past, and Sophie must decide where her loyalty lies.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Alice begs Ryan to save her from the brainwashed Kate, but she doesn't.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: Alice is the one who tortures and kills Black Mask's mooks to find Angelique and Ocean's location, which she then shares with Batwoman.
  • Brainwashed: Enigma makes Kate think she is Roman Sionis's daughter Circe.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Alice tortures a False Face member with a blowtorch.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Circe was apparently the right hand of her father.
  • Defiant Captive: Kate towards Black Mask, not that it helps her.
  • Do with Him as You Will: Ryan leaves Alice at the hands of Circe/Kate.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Alice and Ryan encounter a member of the False Face Society, with neither knowing that she is a brainwashed Kate.
    • Alice blamed Kate for not sensing she was nearby when Kate and Jacob found the cabin where she was being held in years earlier. Yet, now Kate is standing in front of her, and Alice does not sense Kate at all.
  • Dual Wielding: Kate, after being brainwashed into being "Circe", fights with two karambits.
  • Enemy Mine: Alice and Ryan team up to find Ocean and Angelique. While Ryan initially refuses, Alice forces her by killing the False Face member who gave up the location of the two.
  • Get Out!: Jacob once again blows up at Sophie, causing her to correctly conclude that there is definitely something wrong with him.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Ryan has no problem leaving Alice at the hands of Circe.
  • I Lied: Alice reveals she lied about forgetting Cora.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Sophie tells Ryan about the Crows testing a DNA sample from Batwoman.
    • Alice tells Ryan that Ocean is alive.
    • Sophie figures out that Mary works with Batwoman.
    • Alice figures out that Ryan and Angelique are a couple, as Ryan does about Alice and Ocean.
    • Sophie learns that Jacob has been taking snakebite, and tells Mary.
  • Ironic Echo: Alice tells Ryan that she can't save everyone, in reference to Angelique. Later on, Ryan throws the same words back at her before abandoning her.
  • It's All My Fault: Ryan apologizes to Angelique, blaming herself for getting her in trouble again, though Angelique is quick to disabuse her of it, admitting that her own criminal choices lead her to where she is.
  • Kick the Dog: Jacob callously brings up Sophie's secret fling with Kate at Point Rock when rejecting her concern for him again.
  • Light Is Not Good: As "Circe", Kate wears a long white coat and white shorts as part of her ensemble, in addition to the pale mask covering her injured face.
  • Loophole Abuse: Mary has brought her clinic up to code so it can go legit and even bought a fax machine to report potential criminals, but it isn't plugged in and she notes she doesn't technically have to hire anyone for technical support.
  • Mythology Gag: A subtle one. As "Circe", Kate uses a pair of karambits; in the comics, she does own several such knives, though has never been shown using them.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Alice compares herself and Kate to Angelique and Batwoman. Beth was kept in captivity for eleven years, with her twin sister Kate coming this close to saving her, only to end up (unknowingly) leaving her behind. Meanwhile, Angelique was Ryan's Only Friend in foster care, only to get left behind when Ryan was adopted. Alice also compares Ryan's hopes of saving Angelique from life as a drug dealer to Kate's attempts at saving/reforming Alice.
  • The Nth Doctor: Kate has been disfigured, and her face is kept hidden under a mask. Her larynx is said to have been injured, which is why her voice sounds different now, and she has extensive burns which imply her numerous tattoos are now gone.
  • Offscreen Momentof Awesome: Alice offing most of Black Mask's men at their hideout. When Ryan gets there, she sees a trail of bodies.
  • Oh, Crap!: Alice's reaction when Black Mask decides to just shoot her. To her luck, he reconsiders.
  • Put on a Bus: Angelique goes into Witness Protection.
  • Save the Villain: Subverted. Ryan leaves Alice behind in the coldest way possible.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Sophie helps stop the Crows from learning Batwoman's identity but doesn't let anyone on the team know she knows.
  • Shout-Out: Alice compares Ryan to Little Orphan Annie.
  • Tap on the Head: Alice knocks out "Circe" by way of a fire extinguisher to the head. She's down for less than 10 seconds and still manages to subdue both Ryan and Alice when she wakes up.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: While Alice is rather nonchalant about teaming up with Batwoman, Batwoman herself is understandably less so.
Alice: Ooh, what does this button do?
Batwoman: Pisses me off. Don't make me hit the ejector seat.
    Alice: That exists?
    Batwoman: Wanna find out?
    Alice: Kinda.
  • Title Drop: The title comes from Alice playing with the buttons in the Batmobile and finding the Self-Destruct Mechanism.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Ryan refuses to come to Alice's rescue against Circe... moments after Alice did exactly that for her.
  • Villainous Rescue: Alice saves Ryan from "Circe" by whacking her over the head. Ryan doesn't return the favour.
  • We Need a Distraction: Mary distracts Jacob by showing him her renovated clinic in order for Sophie to corrupt Ryan's DNA files.
  • What Does This Button Do?: Alice has some fun pressing the buttons in the Batmobile.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Luke is not happy about Ryan compromising her identity to save Angelique.
  • The Worf Effect: Kate ends up overpowering both Ryan and Alice at the same time.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Black Mask forces Ocean and Angelique to make how-to video on cooking Snakebite, after which a mook will kill them. He gets as far as shooting Ocean in the gut before Batwoman saves them.
