Recap / Batman Wayne Family Adventures Episode 105 Trivia Night

Go To

Clark and Diana come for their monthly hang-out, only to balk at the thought of Trivia Night with the super-competitive Bruce. Bruce insists he isn't competitive, and the evening turns into a contest to see who breaks first.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Cathartic Scream: Bruce insists he isn't hyper-competitive, and he stays determined to prove his two friends wrong even as they purposely get every question incorrect. Using breathing exercises, he remains composed until they say goodnight and he reaches his bedroom...whereupon he screams into his pillow.
  • Competition Freak: When Bruce says he picked a trivia night as their activity, Diana and Clark are both reluctant, explaining that these kinds of games aren't recommended for someone as driven as he is. A flashback shows him yelling at Clark as the latter stares at a paper and ultimately rage-sweeping the table. Now we know where Damian gets it from...
  • Continuity Nod: Bruce wears the wig and mustache Stephanie used in "Crush".
  • Desk Sweep of Rage: In a flashback, Bruce angrily throws some papers off a table when his attempt to make sure Clark doesn't lose them any points doesn't go well.
  • Epic Fail: Done on purpose; the first trivia question is what the superhero of Gotham is called. Clark and Diana (who both know Batman personally) intentionally get it wrong to poke Bruce. By the end of the evening, one of the contest runners expresses amazement that they didn't get a single question right.
  • The Gadfly: The entire evening consists of Clark and Diana getting the most elementary trivia questions wrong in an effort to mess with their hyper-competitive teammate, who insists it won't bother him. After being put through previous competitions under his iron fist, they're both pleased to annoy him back. He holds off expressing his frustration until he gets home, but Super-Hearing means that it doesn't matter.
  • Head Desk: A variant; the flashback shows Diana putting her head on the table as the over-competitive Bruce loses his temper at the contest not going as well as he wants.
  • Heroes Gone Fishing: The entire episode is about Clark and Diana coming to Gotham to hang out with Bruce. The trio apparently meets up once a month, with the choice of activity rotating between the members.
  • Master of Disguise: Bruce Wayne, once again. Unlike when Stephanie used a similar disguise to spy on Duke, his disguise works, at least for a few minutes, before Clark and Diana recognize him.
  • Noodle Incident: This isn't the first time the three Justice League members have done trivia night, but Bruce loses his crap every time they miss a question. Apparently he made a scene last time they went.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: When Bruce announces the activity he picked, Diana says that she and Clark both love him, but Trivia Night with him would be super stressful. Clark is Happily Married to Lois Lane and, though Diana doesn't have a boyfriend in the comic, she doesn't show any signs of being romantically interested in Bruce.
  • Super-Hearing: Superman hears Bruce's muffled scream of frustration while flying back home.
  • Sweat Drop: After Bruce announces the activity, Diana rolls her eyes as a huge sweat drop appears on her head, signifying how awful she thinks it will be to join a competition with him. A similar sweat drop appears in the flashback.
  • Wing Ding Eyes: In the flashback of some past competition, an angry Bruce gets flame eyes.
