Recap / Barney & Friends S1 E3 "Playing It Safe"

Go To

Barney and his friends learn about various safety rules. The kids build cardboard box-cars to practice driving safely and wearing their seatbelts. Baby Bop soon joins in and the gang talks about safely crossing the street. The kids become members of Barney's safety patrol and help teach Baby Bop about not talking to strangers. After a day of fun, Barney accidentally stumbles on a toy, reminding the gang that picking up their things is an essential safety rule too.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Dramatic Slip: Towards the end of the episode, Barney slips on a toy ambulance, crashing into some blocks and spraining his tail in the process.
  • Kids Prefer Boxes: Inverted. Barney's way of giving the kids cars... is by making cardboard boxes appear. The kids are initially baffled, but with the help of the Barney Bag (and some imagination), they turn these boxes into literal box-cars.
  • Too Smart for Strangers: Derek brings up not talking to strangers as a safety rule. This gives Barney and the gang an opportunity to teach Baby Bop about stranger danger through a play of "Little Red Riding Hood." In Barney fashion, this segment is topped off with a song teaching this very moral.
