Tropes:

  • Boom, Headshot!: The captain of the first Marleyan scouting ship has this fate, courtesy of Yelena.
  • Brick Joke: When confronting the crew of the first Marleyan ship the captain denies Hange's request for a peaceful talk over tea saying he doesn't want to drink any of their "pig piss". Later on when the next group of sailors is captured Levi holds them at gunpoint and sarcastically welcomes them to Paradis and to try some of their "pig piss".
  • The Bus Came Back: Annie returns for the first time in the present day storyline, albeit still in her crystal, as the audience listening to Armin's story.
  • The Coup: Yelena and the members of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers that are on board the first scouting ship shot the ships captain then hold the other crew members hostage so they can negotiate with Hange.
  • First Contact Faux Pas: Subverted. Sasha asks Onyankopon why he has black skin, which would have been seen as insensitive in any other context. However, Onyankopon takes it in stride since the Paradisians have never seen any other races besides their own, and he explains that he and his people were made as such by the being who imbued Ymir Fritz with her powers, God himself.
  • Foreign Queasine: Inverted, as Sasha absolutely adores the Marleyan food Nicolo cooks.
  • How We Got Here: Armin tells someone (who at the end of the episode is revealed to be a still crystallized Annie) the story of how the Paradisian's meet the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers three years ago and how they got to this point in time.
  • Impossibly Delicious Food: As part of their ongoing negotiations Nicolo is told to cook some seafood for the Paradisians. Since they have never had seafood before they are naturally suspicious but soon can't get enough of the stuff especially Sasha.
  • Like Brother and Sister: At Sasha's grave Connie mournfully states that she was like his twin and that he feels as if he lost half of himself when she died.
  • Luminescent Blush: Nicolo blushes after Sasha praises his cooking for the first time and it is implied that this is the point he begins defrosting towards the Eldians.
  • Mood Whiplash: There is some great tonal dissonance in this episode since the flashback has probably the most humor seen all season while the present day scenes are all depressing since they take place after Sasha's death.
  • Morton's Fork: Armin notes that the Paradisians needed more time in order to try and convince the rest of the world that they aren't dangerous but were then forced to attack Marley. However he notes that if they didn't attack Marley then it would have launched an attack from their port eventually and their actions have bought the Paradisians time. He concludes to Annie that they didn't have any choice either.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Defied at first, but then played straight; Hange has trouble disguising her amazement at some of the technology the Marleyans have access to, like guns or aircraft. Levi tells them to not look overly excited about it, because he thinks it will make the Paradisians look stupid in front of the Volunteer Soldiers, but when Yelena tells Hange and Levi about airplanes, they can't help but to play this trope straight.
  • Reckless Gun Usage: Hange points a Marleyan pistol Yelena gives her at her own face while she is examining it.
