Recap / Attack On Titan S 3 E 10 Friends

Go To

A dying Kenny recounts more of his past in flashbacks- how he saved Levi, how he came to serve Uri Reiss, and his true motivation for wanting the power of the Founding Titan. After giving Levi a needle of Titan serum and confirming Levi's relation to him, Kenny perishes. Historia is crowned true ruler of the walls by the military and exercises her newfound power- to punch Levi with impunity. Somewhere far away, the Beast Titan defeats the Armored Titan in combat and tells Reiner and Bertolt that rescuing Annie can wait- for now they wait for the Scouts to come to them.

  • A Death in the Limelight: This episode fleshes out Kenny's motivations, character, and relationship with Levi more than any previous episode had. He fittingly passes away towards the end.
  • Almost Dead Guy: Mortally wounded for nearly a full day, Kenny has just long enough to reveal useful information to Levi before dying.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: Historia becomes Queen Historia Reiss, true ruler of the Walls.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Beast Titan returns... and he's in cahoots with Reiner and Bertholdt.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Whatever the Beast Titan does to Reiner, it puts several huge holes in his Titan's armor, which so far nobody has been able to do. The human controlling the Beast Titan doesn't even seem to be that tired from the fight.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: By Attack on Titan standards, the Uprising arc ends on a relatively high note. Despite some military and civilian losses, through the actions of many individuals making a difference, the corrupt nobility was overthrown, the shadowy government conspiracy was dismantled, the Scouts are reinstated, and both Historia and Eren have given real hope to the people within the Walls. Additionally, Eren now has the means (theoretically) to seal the hole in Wall Maria.
  • Emergency Transformation: Defied, Kenny refuses to inject himself with the Titan serum to save himself. He gives it to Levi instead.
  • Evil Uncle: Kenny is Levi's uncle.
  • Funny Background Event: When Historia actually strikes Levi, everyone present is shocked... except for Mikasa, who's smirking.
  • I Die Free: Kenny decides to just die and be done with his crappy life rather than risk an uncertain future as a mindless Titan with the serum.
  • Might Makes Right: The Beast Titan implies from his dialogue that because he won his "fight" with Reiner, Reiner and Bertolt must follow his orders rather than try to rescue Annie.
  • Odd Friendship: Kenny and Uri. Who would've thought that the sadistic, Psychopathic Manchild professional killer and the forgiving, pacifistic ruler of the Walls would have made good friends?
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: In the manga, Historia hits Levi as (lighthearted) revenge for him physically coercing her into becoming Queen as part of Erwin's plan. In the anime, that scene is absent, and it's re-contextualized as her exerting her untouchable status as Queen (set up by Mikasa giving her the idea the episode prior).
  • Rightful Queen Returns: The official story put out by the military is that Rod Reiss was a tyrant ruling from the shadows and his more deserving heir struck him down to reclaim the throne.
  • When He Smiles: Levi finally laughs and smiles for once.
  • The Worf Effect: The Armored Titan's famous protective shell, strong enough to shrug off cannon fire and the ultra-sharp blades that the humans use, gets punctured thoroughly by the Beast Titan.
