Elsewhere on the battlefield, the recruits are trapped and demoralized, with nobody having the gas to escape to the inner wall. Jean and Mikasa each attempt to to take charge, and when disaster strikes an unexpected Titan appears...
Tropes:
- All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Titans have surrounded the Garrison forward operating base, which means that nobody can get in or out to resupply.
- Ate His Gun: One member of the Resupply Team calmly commits suicide this way rather than get eaten.
- Better to Die than Be Killed:
- That one trainee that blows his brains out with a rifle before Titans get into their HQ.
- Armin requests that Mikasa leaves him one broken blade so he doesn't get Eaten Alive. Mikasa flings the blade away, refusing to abandon him.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: The aberrant Titan does this both figuratively and literally to the first Titan to try to eat Mikasa.
- Dirty Coward: The Garrison superior officer who abandons the Supply HQ trainees to their fate.
- Do Not Go Gentle: Mikasa changes her mind about accepting death when she remembers Eren telling her to fight back.
- Face Death with Dignity: Mikasa momentarily allows herself to give up hope when she's surrounded by two 15-meter class Titans. Subverted when she instinctively dodges a Titan's hand, and subsequently decides to at least try to fight back.
- Foreshadowing:
- Mikasa mentioning that the aberrant Titan's roar seemed to embody of all of humanity's collective rage. Now, who does that sound like?
- The aberrant Titan adopting a boxing stance and fighting with human-like intelligence is another clue as to its identity.
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Members of the 104th attempting to shake Armin out of his Heroic BSoD. It takes Mikasa to get him back on his feet.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Mikasa realizes that in her emotional rage, her charge lead to more than a few of her fellow Trainee's deaths. Jean is also horrified that, by taking charge, his plan to save some of the recruits needed to leave others to die.
- Shaming the Mob: Mikasa gives a short speech proclaiming that she is stronger than everyone and that she'll do something about their situation. Sasha also calls out everyone on being cowardly and slow, which further prompts them to follow the main group.
- Tranquil Fury: Mikasa is absolutely furious/despairing that she lost Eren, but nobody can see it besides Armin. She seems to let it manifest in her slaying every Titan in her path.
- Villainous Rescue: Mikasa is saved from one Titan by another one.
- Wham Shot: The 2nd 15 meter class Titan giving another Titan a Megaton Punch, thereby fighting its own kind instead of trying to eat Mikasa.
