Recap / Arthur S 10 E 07 Unfinished DW Bossy Boots

Go To

Arthur gets into an old book titled 93,000,000 Miles in a Balloon, but the last pages are missing, and he's desperate to find another copy so he can finish the story.

Tropes for "Unfinished" include:

  • Art Shift: The scenes we see inside the book have crosshatched shading.
  • Big "NO!": Arthur lets out one of these when he sees that the ending pages from the copy of 93,000,000 Miles in a Balloon that he got from a woman in Shelbytown are scribbled all over with crayons, courtesy of her children.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Arthur does not find out the ending and still wants closure on the book. His dad tells him that knowing there is an ending and looking for it is exciting; and even if Arthur can't find it, he can still make his own ending to satisfy his desire.
  • Conveniently Interrupted Document: Arthur's copy of the book is so old that the last few pages have fallen out and gotten lost, and when he does get another copy, the last pages are completely scribbled over in crayon.
  • Extremely Overdue Library Book: The library used to have a copy of the book, but it was checked out 10 years ago and never returned, and whoever borrowed it moved out of Elwood City and didn't leave a forwarding address.
  • In Name Only: In-Universe, One of Arthur's numerous failed attempts to find out the ending to 93,000,000 Miles in a Balloon includes hunting down an old 16mm film adaptation... only to find it's a musical about a woman flying from Nebraska to Broadway in a hot air balloon. This is quickly lampshaded when Arthur reads a history book to learn how this happened, revealing that the producer deliberately dropped the book's plot in favor of writing an original musical with the same title to showcase his songwriting talent.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: In-Universe, 93,000,000 Miles in a Balloon has long gone out of print, and Arthur tries desperately to find another printing of it that has the last few pages, since his doesn't.
  • What Are Records?: When Arthur's mother does an online search for anything relating to 93,000,000 Miles in a Balloon, she finds out a movie adaptation was produced and can be rented on 16 millimeter. Arthur asks "What's 16 millimeter?" The scene then changes to Arthur and his friends about to watch the movie on a noisy old 16mm film projector...
Dad: It's been 25 years since I've used this old 16mm projector. Hope it makes it!
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: When Arthur gets a copy of 93,000,000 Miles in a Balloon that includes the ending pages from a woman in Shelbytown, he finds that her children scribbled all over the pages with crayons, making them unreadable.

D.W. behaves bossily at Emily's birthday party, and now her friends don't want to be around her.
