Recap / Arrested Development S 5 E 16 The Fallout

Go To

Buster's trial continues. With Dusty and John Beard's help Michael uncovers old footage of an eight-year old Buster being hypnotized after either he or Lucille killed Lucille's mother Mimi by pushing her down the stairs. John Beard also shows Michael the footage of the night of Cinco de Cuatro, when GOB shoved a forget-me-now down his throat, causing him to start remembering some of the events of that night.

Michael rushes to the courthouse and accuses Lucille of having killed Mimi and maybe Lucille 2 as well, but his new uncertainties about what he himself was doing that night ultimately lead him to accuse himself of murdering Lucille 2. Lottie Dottie pronounces a mistrial. Lucille later admits she planted the tapes for Michael to find so that he would accuse her instead of Buster, Buster did push Mimi down the stairs.

Two weeks later, the unveiling of prototypes of both the wall and Fakeblock is underway, closely watched by the Chinese investors and heckled by a crowd of paid protesters led by Tobias and paid for by Maeby.

With Buster as his assistant, GOB starts his magic show, but something goes wrong: he finds himself encased in concrete, unable to move but still able to breathe. Meanwhile George Michael reveals he had sold Fakeblock and his loyalty to the Howard family, causing Michael and George Michael to start fighting. Appalled by both events, the Chinese accept to take the ownership of Fakeblock and forgive the rest of the debt. Sally Sitwell also lets the Bluths off the hook, not going to approve the wall, calling the entire happening "a debacle".

But everything is not so bad. Michael and George Michael's fight had been staged, and both not-encased-in-concrete GOB and a very much alive Tony Wonder come on stage to finish the show, and both men agree to stay friends. The severed foot Michael received was a fake one, a botched online order by Buster who now wears it as a hand (at least they got the "left" part right at Alibaba) . The Fakeblock software the Chinese left with turned out to be worthless. And at long last Michael remembers what happened last time he saw Lucille 2: he did make a complete fool out of himself, but did not kill her.

Once most attendees leave, Lucille reveals that the idea of paid protesters was hers and not Maeby's, as she hoped to bring out Lucille 2. One of the paid protesters reveals herself to be Lindsay, who came back after Maeby showed her the series about the Bluths produced by Ron Howard, that clearly identified the long-dead Mimi as Lindsay's real mother. Meanwhile, Michael and George Michael quietly leave in the stair car, and according to Maeby (who was the only person they said goobye to) they are gone for good.

Despite Buster's protests, two workers demolish the wall prototype so that GOB can retrieve his mask from the mannequin. What falls out of the wall however is not a mannequin, but Lucille 2's dead body. Buster admits he killed her and happily asks whether the others think she looks like Lucille 1. While the family looks at Buster, horrified, Michael and his son peacefully drive off...

The Arrested Development episode "The Fallout" provides examples of:

  • Back for the Finale: Lindsay returns during the last five minutes of the episode.
  • Batman Gambit:
    • Lucille tells Dusty to destroy some evidence fully knowing that Micheal will investigate and find it and use the apparent evidence of Lucille forcing Buster to take the blame for her killing Mimi to discredit the court case that if Buster has killed before he would kill again.
Lucille: I couldn't exactly accuse myself of killing Mimi, I would just look like a loving mother lying to protect her son!
    • Michael and George Michael, with Maeby's assistance, stage a fake falling out to trick the Chinese investors into buying Fakeblock from them, with no strings attached, even if the software doesn't work. This gets the Bluths fully out of debt and no longer under obligation to the Chinese.
  • Constructive Body Disposal: Lucille 2's body was hidden in a wall of cement.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The footage of Buster being hypnotized shows the hypnotist having a hard time keeping the story straight. It turns out to be because the hypnosis is particularly convoluted; Buster did kill Mimi and Lucille is having him hypnotized to think she did it but is having him take the blame to avoid punishment.
    • Buster slowly unravels throughout the episode and comes close to giving himself away as Lucille 2's murderer on multiple occasions before the reveal, but is ignored every time.
  • Evolving Credits: After the reveal about Lindsay being Lucille's half-sister in the previous episode, this episode's title sequence changes her description from "his twin sister" to "his aunt". Maeby and Tobias are still referred to as "his niece" and "his brother-in-law" however, even though strictly speaking they're now his cousin and uncle respectively.
  • Extra-Long Episode: This episode lasts twice the length of a regular episode and is split in two even parts (the first one dealing with Buster's trial, the second one dealing with the wall). It might as well be a two-parter.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: We never see Lucille 2's corpse clearly, but we are told that somehow her face has been frozen into a huge smile.
  • History Repeats: Being a likely Series Finale, this episode features a couple of events echoing those from the original series finale "Development Arrested".
    • Lindsay dealing with news about her parentage, calling Lucille by her first name, and rethinking her relationship with Tobias.
    • Michael and George Michael leave without saying goodbye, except this time we barely see them do it.
    • Meanwhile, having just dealt with the current big crisis (George's imprisonment / Buster's trial and the deal with the Chinese), their family is thrown into another one (Lucille's pirating the Queen Mary / Buster turning out to be Lucille 2's murderer).
  • Kissing Cousins: Before leaving for good, George Michael and Maeby share a knowingly incestuous (since she is revealed to be his father's cousin after all) Big Damn Kiss in the background. Apparently the knowledge that they're first cousins once removed instead of outright cousins is enough for them to no longer feel squicky about it.
  • Left Hanging: The cast considered this to be the definite ending as they are unsure if they can produce another season, as a result we are left with some last-minute plot threads.
    • So what happened to Stan Sitwell?
    • What exactly did Buster do?
  • Meaningful Background Event: Michael and George Michael quietly recede in the background during the final scene and leave without saying goodbye to anyone except Maeby.
  • Once More, with Clarity:
    • The missing dialogue between Michael and Lucille 2 from Cinco de Cuatro is finally shown.
    • The conversation between George Michael and Murph, when Murph shows a piece of software he wrote that exactly fit the specs of Fakeblock is expanded to show that no, it doesn't work. It makes files unreadable for hackers by corrupting them, making them unreadable, period.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: DeBrie and Murph left Tobias since the previous episode, and only appear in a brief flashback. He himself barely appears in the episode.
  • Tempting Fate: As the family joke about how Micheal will likely return the next time the family is in a crisis, George Sr. asserts that the family is likely done having problems. Cue the murder reveal.
  • The Problem with Pen Island: Tobias' T-shirt in the second half of the episode says "Use less" (it is supposed to be about the environment). The joke really doesn't need explaining.
  • The Reveal:
    • Tony Wonder is alive after all.
    • Michael finally remembers what he did on the night of Cinco de Cuatro: After a heated argument with Lucille 2, he did a chicken dance in front of her, fell down the stairs (hence the bruises) and ruined his last shirt (hence the banana stand shirt). Ashamed of his words and actions, he immediately left.
    • It is confirmed in this episode that Lucille 2 is really dead, and her murderer is Buster.
  • Riddle for the Ages:
    • Given the Hand Wave that Lindsay and Lucille are not sisters but rather half-sisters, the exact parentage between Lucille, Lindsay, Mimi, Nana from season 1, a father and a probable stepfather became a topic of discussion online.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The thumbnail for this episode on Netflix clearly shows Lindsay being back.
  • Unreveal Angle: We never get a look at the face of Lucille 2's body, we only see the reactions of the characters starring at it.
  • Wham Shot: Lucille 2's body falling out of the wall and Buster's comment on it, revealing him to be the culprit after all.
