Recap / Arrested Development S3E5 "Mr. F"

Go To

Gob tries to trick the company's Japanese investors by building a "Tiny Town", but Tobias ruins everything after he mistakes a CIA agent for a talent agent from CAA.

The Arrested Development episode "Mr. F" provides examples of:

  • Air-Vent Passageway: George Sr. tries to escape custody by sneaking into the ventilation duct behind the fridge. Unfortunately he gets trapped there.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: George orders a jetpack to try and escape and George Michael winds up with it instead. The instructional DVD is in Japanese and even that shows that there is so much work into getting the jetpack to work properly for so little reward. When he does get it going, he ends up crashing into Tobias (who is dressed in a mole suit) and wrecking Tiny Town, much to Gob's (and the Japanese investors') disgust. Gob later tries to use it to enter the prison, but forgets to strap it on.
  • Bait-and-Switch Accusation: Downplayed. Michael mentions to Rita that they got a mole problem. She looks irritated but then it becomes clear that he meant real moles who undermined the hill.
  • Depth Deception: Gob cooks up a scheme to fool the Japanese investors that the Bluth Company has completed the housing development by building a model town. He even instructs the investors to stand still in a particular spot when he unveils it, knowing it would reveal the illusion.
  • Description Cut: Michael asserts everybody that he hasn't told Rita anything, but then we see flashbacks of him doing exactly that.
  • Inside a Wall: It turns out Annyong has been living in the walls of Lucille's apartment.
  • Kaiju: Godzilla is mentioned when the family are discussing the Japanese investors. The episode culminates in a parody of kaiju movies when Tobias, wearing a mole costume, blunders into the model town and tramples the buildings. His rampage is ended when George-Michael enters wearing the jet pack George Sr. bought in the hopes of using it to escape his house arrest.
  • The Mole: This episode focusses on one infiltrating the Bluth company for the CIA, known only as "Mr. F". The family suspects Michael's girlfriend Rita, and this is semi-confirmed when he sees "Mr. F" written on her bracelet. However, it turns out to be Tobias.
  • Red Herring Mole: Rita. First we are treated to some suspicious conversations between her and her uncle making her look like a spy. And then we learn about a dubious "Mr. F", the same name Michael sees engraved on her wristband. However, "Mr F." was a CIA mole who turns out to be Mr. Fünke.
  • Shout-Out: Astro Boy is mentioned in passing.
  • Spies In a Van: The CIA agents operate out of a van labelled "Blendin Catering".
  • Visible Boom Mic: Invoked for laughs. We see a boom mic in the office when they talk about a listening device in the room.
  • Wham Line: "She's an MRF: Mentally Retarded Female."
