Recap / Arrested Development S3E12 "Exit Strategy"

Go To

George Michael's surprise birthday party for Maeby lands her in big trouble; Michael and Buster make a startling discovery when they go to Iraq to rescue Gob.

The Arrested Development episode "Exit Strategy" provides examples of:

  • Body Double: The Bluth brothers meets a whole household of former Saddam Hussein decoys, one of whom is strongly implied to the real Saddam Hussein.
  • Brick Joke: The Saddam Hussein impersonator sent to trial in place of the real Saddam Hussein has set up a website: imnoscar.com
  • The Cameo: John Munch appears in this episode as "Prof. Munch"
  • Cassandra Truth:
    • It turns out George Sr really was put up to making the model homes, by CIA East.
    • The Saddam Hussein who is put on trial is actually one of his Body Doubles, and he keeps insisting on the stand that the real Saddam Hussein is still out there, but nobody believes him. In the end, Michael is the only one who realizes the truth.
  • Casting Gag: Larry Thomas, best known for his role as the Soup Nazi in Seinfeld, appears as Saddam Hussein, pretending to be one of his own Body Doubles. George Sr. had in a previous episode claimed that he mistook Saddam Hussein for the actor who played the Soup Nazi.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: GOB notes that Achmed must have trouble impersonating Saddam Hussein with the large scar across his face. It later turns out he is the real Saddam Hussein.
  • Chewing the Scenery: The Saddam Hussein doubles say that this is an important aspect of their act.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: Playfully subverted when the prosecution, Wayne Jarvis, tells Michael that GOB's imprisonment in Iraq is "on the news! Right now!". They switch on the TV, and have to sit around for several minutes waiting for the relevant report to come on. Immediately lampshaded:
Wayne Jarvis: Imagine the impact if that had come on right when we turned on the TV!
  • Funny Background Event: Tobias, believing that "the prosecution" is a CBS show that wants access to the family documents for set dressing, insists that "Hollywood shows are so incredibly detailed"; at the same time, he opens a kitchen cupboard which is empty save for a single coffee cup. Moments later George Michael opens another cupboard to get a snack, which is also the only item inside it.
  • Right Hand Versus Left Hand: A good handful of episodes so far have had the family business being messed up by this happening within the Bluth Company, but this trope is at its most noticeable when this episode reveals that the CIA East put George Sr. up to building houses in Iraq and the CIA West pressed charges against George Sr. for building houses in Iraq, both without consulting each other.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: The camera pans away before George Michael and Maeby go to second base.
  • Wham Line: "I'm telling you, you've got the wrong guy! The real Saddam has a scar on his head! I'm No-Scar! imnoscar.com!"
