Go To

The Arrested Development episode "Justice Is Blind" provides examples of:

  • As the Good Book Says...: A Running Gag in this episode is everyone misquoting the Bible's Ten Commandments.
GOB: Oh, now you love the Ten Commandments. And yet you’re the one who so conveniently forgot “thou shalt protect thy father, and honor no one above him unless it beith me, thy sweet Lord."
Michael: I’m not sure that one made it down the mountain, GOB.

Maggie: You lied to me. Chareth Cutestory?
Michael: I know, "thou shalt not make up a name in vain".

Maggie: Well, it’s like the Ten Commandments say, you know? "Be true to thine own self, and to thine own self-"
Michael: “-be true." Yeah, number seven.
  • Double-Meaning Title: A principal character is a blind lawyer. Actually, it's a triple meaning title, because it's revealed that she isn't blind, but her dog, literally named Justice, is!
  • Gilligan Cut: "Hmm. Yeah. I'll stay for one drink." - cut to drunk Michael carrying drunk Maggie out of the pub.
  • Heaven Above: Michael wistfully ponders how easy life would be if there were instructions sent from "on high." He then tells his son to watch his head as they duck under a memorial to the Ten Commandments being brought down from on high by a crane.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Michael's claim that "Justice isn't blind" is followed by the dog jumping into a dumpster at the vet.
  • Irony: Read the above again.
  • Littlest Cancer Patient: Parodied: Maeby pretends to be a terminally ill student named Surely Fünke so that the school will hold fundraisers for "her" and she can abscond with the money and the grades.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Michael and Maggie in the courthouse.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Played with: An attorney who can actually see claims to be blind in order to get the sympathy of her jurors; the Bluths try to expose her fake disability but fail spectacularly because (only) on the day that they decided to prove she was not blind, she actually was temporarily blind due to an accident. She regained her sight in full the following day, claiming that being hit by the Bible miraculously restored her sight.
  • Out of Order: Hope you watched "Missing Kitty" before "Altar Egos", or this next episode's going to make no sense!
  • Shout-Out to Shakespeare: One of the "Bible" quotes is actually a paraphrase of a line from Hamlet ("To thine own self be true").
  • String Theory: Maggie has a panel with photos of all the Bluth family members in her home.
  • Title Drop: "Mr Bluth, Justice is blind."
  • Theme Twin Naming: Maeby's supposed twin is named Surely.
  • Wham Line:
Vet: Justice is fine. Although... dressing him up like a seeing-eye dog seems a little cruel.
    Michael: Cruel?
Vet: Well yeah, because he can't see.
Michael: What are you talking about?
Vet: Mr Bluth... Justice is blind.
