"Returned... has... BADGE!"
Tucker does a comical impression of Gary, who hasn't arrived yet. Tucker turns - and finds himself face-to-face with his brother. Gary calmly takes back his glasses, and breaks into a smile - everyone has some kind of talent: but some are less obvious than others. Some talents lie in wait for someone or something to bring them out. But can they always be controlled? Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, he calls this story "The Tale of Badge."

In her bedroom, Gwen practises her flute. Grandmother Willy knocks, enters, and with a "Happy Birthday," proffers a wooden chest. Willy takes out a red gemstone, the Jasper, and explains it to uniquely belong to Gwen. While her parents go to respective meetings, Gwen is tasked with watching younger brother Trevor.

Trevor sneaks into Willy’s study, and examines the wooden chest. While Gwen talks on the phone, Trevor blows into the wooden flute. A nearby crystal glows green. Outside the window rises an ethereal mist…

As Gwen talks into the phone, the lights fail, plunging the house into darkness. The phone is dead. With a knock at the front door, a polite male voice requests directions to "Setterwind." Gwen nervously tells him to try next door. From outside comes the voice of Willy, claiming to have forgotten her keys. Gwen opens the door.

Instead of her grandmother, bluish white light frames a silhouetted figure, who leaps into the hallway. The rat-faced Goblin introduces himself as Badge. He seizes Trevor’s shoulders, and shoves him towards the front door. Trevor involuntarily staggers back towards it, into the bluish white blaze. Badge demands the Setter Wind, bounds back towards the door, and exits.

Gwen runs after him through the ethereal blaze - and stumbles into some kind of murky cavern, bleached with pinkish light, and strewn with rotting creepers. Unseen, Badge bemoans his six centuries' imprisonment. In exchange for Trevor, he demands the Setter Wind. Through the blue glow, Gwen runs back into the hallway. The electric lights return. The chest given to her by Willy, as well as the word "BADGE," is engraved with musical notes. From inside, Gwen takes the wooden flute.

She lowers the Jasper around her neck. The red gemstone starts to glow. She returns to Badge’s garden. Outside the house, a car drops off Willy. Faced with Badge, Gwen recites the magic verse. The Jasper glows... and dims.

Outside, Willy manages to unlock the door, and steps into the ethereal glow. Behind Gwen, she materialises, and tells her to play the song.

Gwen fades from view, and finds herself back in the hallway. Back in Willy’s study, Gwen wonders what her grandmother meant by "the song." She looks at the inscription - and perceives it to spell the musical notes B, A, D, G, and E. Gwen play a note. In the open chest, the crystal glows green.

As Gwen continues to play, the ethereal notes sound through Badge's cavern. The goblin involuntarily stumbles into the bluish white light, and staggers into the hallway. With a final note, he twists, warps, and is dragged into the green-glowing crystal.

Gary closes with note of a unique talent, however unexpected, to lie in everyone. Stig decides to share his. He stands, cups his hands to his mouth, and affects the howl of a wolf. Instantly, through the distant trees, sound a floating chorus of canine howls. As Gary douses the fire, the others quickly and quietly leave. Alone in the dark, Stig hastily follows...
