"It's a doorway into the future!"
Gary, crystal ball in hand, foretells the respective destinies of his colleagues - Kiki will be a famous singer; Betty Anne will succeed in medicine, Stig a professional wrestler, Sam’s an explorer, and Tucker... will clean elephant cages at the zoo. In his own future, Gary sees a story - about looking into the future. What if a crystal ball really worked? Could a bad future be averted? Or would you be helpless before your impending doom? Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, he calls this story "The Tale of a Door Unlocked."

On the way home from school, Justin and Ben pass the boarded up Albert’s house. Through the doorway, Justin sees his younger brother Michael and friends, and sternly orders him out of the dangerous building.

On passing a girl held in his affection, Justin hides in a shop - the Magic Mansion. Looking outside, he envies Justin's confidence. From behind a curtain pops Sardo. Justin confesses his anxiety around girls. From a cabinet, Sardo brings a model wooden door, about six inches high. It will, on request, show the future: it could anticipate the receptiveness of any prospective girlfriend.

Sardo leaves to answer the phone. Justin asks the door to show him a girl willing to go to the dance with him. He tries its handle, which won’t budge. As Ben starts to walk away, he hears an ominous knocking. He turns, to see the miniature door rocking up and down. From behind the door seeps a tiny stream of smoke. Justin pulls back the tiny square peephole. Beyond is a thick layer of smoke. It partially clears, to reveal the tinily distant face of a mysterious girl. A cloud of smoke then hides her. Astounded, Justin decides to buy it. Sardo adjusts the price of the "one of a kind" item to Justin’s budget of ten dollars.

In the empty Geography classroom, Justin inspects the miniature door - which once again starts to rock. He pulls back the latch, to see, once again, the smoke-surrounded mystery girl. This time, she calls the name "Brad."

That evening, Justin sits back on his bed, doing homework. On a shelf before him, the door briefly rattles. Ben opens the peephole. This time, it shows a more distant view, of the girl entering a door into a darkened, smoky hallway. Just then, she turns - and screams in terror. A huge, burning wooden beam falls to obscure her.

Just before the start of Geography class, Justin and Ben dispute the authenticity of the prophetic door. Mr Birney then introduces the arrival of a new student, Ashley Brewer. Into the room enters... the girl seen in Justin's door.

After class, Justin attempts to discreetly follow Ashley - and walks into a loose locker door. Hearing the sound of metal on flesh, Ashley turns, and with Justin, exchanges introductions. Justin delicately asks if she’s ever been trapped in a burning building. Just then arrive Michael and Brad, who introduces Ashley as his sister.

In the dining hall, Ben notices Justin gazing across the room at Ashley. He ponders how to avert her apparently impending fire hazard. At Ashley’s table, a girl announces a welcome present for her, and produces a heavily candlelit slice of cake. Justin spies the tiny flame. Aghast, he climbs across the tables; lifts a jug of water, and tips some of it onto the cake - and most of it onto Ashley, who gives a small scream.

Another girl lends Ashley her jacket - a blue jacket, like the one worn by Ashley in the miniature door.

After school, Michael leads Brad to the boarded up house of deceased Mr Albert. For membership of Michael’s gang, Brad must visit the master bedroom, and sit in Mr Albert’s chair.

On his bed, Justin examines the miniature door. On the side of its frame, he finds, behind a small, sliding panel, a small key marked "in."

Just then, his bedroom phone rings. It’s Ashley, who asks if her brother Brad is at Justin’s house - Brad said he was going here after school. Justin reports him not to be here. Ashley resolves to go looking for him.

Justin hurries downstairs, and asks his younger sister Mary Jo if she’s seen Michael...

Brad creeps into the master bedroom. He approaches the sheet-draped chair. Before him, two sheet-covered shapes rise, groan spectrally, and advance. Another apparition grabs him from behind. He runs to the door, to be confronted by Michael, holding, in a saucer, a candle.

Outside, Ashley approaches the house, calling for Brad. As he and the others quickly leave, one of them bumps a table, on which stands Michael’s candle. It falls to the floor, and instantly ignites a sheet. Michael, Brad and the others sneak past Ashley, and out of the door...

Justin consults the miniature door. It once again shows Ashley walking cautiously through the gloomy ruin. Justin grabs the key. Into the lock of the miniature door, Justin puts the key, and turns. From inside glares a deep white light. Justin peers into it...

...And is flung through an open upstairs doorway of the Allan house. He picks himself up, and finds himself directly behind Ashley. Just then, from directly above them, Justin notices a heavy creaking. He dives to push Ashley out of the way - just as a flaming beam falls onto the spot where, a second ago, she stood.

The two jump down a laundry shoot, and fall into a locked basement. In the Magic Mansion, as Sardo closes for the day, he hears Justin call for help. Sardo realises the voice to be coming from the displayed miniature door. Justin's voice directs Sardo to the key in the sliding panel. Sardo finds a key marked "out," and puts it into the lock. With a heavy rumble, the miniature door shakes.

In the smoke-filled basement, Justin and Ashley fall through the suddenly open door, and land face-first on Sardo's floor.

...

Tucker snatches Gary's crystal ball; tries his own hand at fortune telling, and accurately predicts Gary's closure of the meeting. Kiki has a go - and foretells Tucker's vengeful pursuit by "a big guy with glasses". Tucker runs.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bedsheet Ghost: As part of their initiation ritual, Michael and friends, in the Allan house’s master bedroom, don sheets and go “woo” at Brad.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: Justin is quite anxious around girls.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Justin, in regard to prospective fire hazard victim Ashley.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Ben is quite dry-witted.
  • Haunted House: Subverted. Whether the Allan house really is haunted is never confirmed - although, its connection to a set of miniature magic doors is notable.
  • Honest John's Dealership: Sardo, as usual, is far from sure about the effectiveness of his magical wares.
  • Portal Door: There are two miniature wooden doors. One opens into an impending fire hazard in the Allan house; the occurrence of said hazard, and provides instantaneous passage through one of the house's inner doors. The other leads out of the house, and into the Magic Mansion.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: In order to save her from a potential fire hazard, Justin throws a jug of water on Ashley - whereupon a friend lends her the coat in which the door showed her in the burning building.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Subverted; as it turns out, Justin doesn’t need to: the door shows Ashley scream in fright at a falling burning beam, but not, as transpires, her and Justin's subsequent escape.
