Recap / Archies Weird Mysteries Misfortune Hunters

Go To

Betty loves to help other people, so when she begins getting fortune cookies that direct her towards good deeds to perform, she accepts it happily. However, the others aren't so sure about the cookies' true nature, and they're proven correct when one of Betty's good deeds unleashes a monster on Riverdale.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Evil Is Petty: The monster goes around committing random acts of mischief and chaos to terrorize Riverdale. Most of them aren't even dangerous, simply annoying, but he finds them hilarious.
  • Flaw Exploitation: The fortune hunters lure Betty into going after the treasure for them by slipping her fortune cookies with good deeds to do, knowing that only a pure-hearted person can pass the traps.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: After being fooled into taking the dagger that kept the monster locked up, Betty wises up. She pretends to fall for the monster's coaxing about being nice to him only to get him back in the chest.
  • Heroic BSoD: Betty is devastated when the monster escapes thanks to her "goody-two-shoes" ways and makes up her mind that she's not doing any more altruistic things that could potentially become twisted. Naturally, this only lasts until she sees someone hurt thanks to her unleashing the monster.
  • It's Personal: When her father ends up injured by the monster's rampage, Betty snaps out of her funk and makes up her mind to fix the problem she accidentally created.
  • Keep Away: The gang plays a game of "monkey-in-the-middle" to keep the dagger out of the monster's reach. Unfortunately, this ends when the monster levitates Archie and Jughead upside down as they try to pass it.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: When Archie and the others confront them, the fortune hunters try to ram their car to escape with the dagger. However, the monster has tied their rear wheels to a tree, causing them to wreck their own car in the attempt. While he's laughing and they're stunned from the crash, Archie grabs the dagger back.
  • On Second Thought: After a little while in the catacombs, Reggie refuses to go any farther...until the group hears the monster yelling for them to give it the dagger. Everyone runs away.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The monster starts out shut in a chest. When Betty removes the dagger keeping it shut, believing it to be a lost heirloom, he escapes and goes on a rampage. Luckily, she manages to trick him back in.
  • Shout-Out: When Betty turns up to fix her mistake, she dresses like Lara Croft.
  • Trauma Button Ending: According to Archie's ending write-up, Betty now steers clear of fortune cookies.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Reggie and Veronica aren't very impressed by Betty's altruism. Veronica explicitly warns her that she'll never get anywhere in life. As the episode goes on, their comments progress to more sympathetic concern about people taking advantage of Betty due to her trusting nature.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The fortune hunters are least seen being dazed after their car wrecked by one of the demon's pranks, leaving Archie to steal the dagger from them. We don't see if they're ever brought in for unleashing the demon, assuming Archie and the gang could prove it.
