Recap / Archer S 5 E 9 Archer Vice On The Carpet

Go To

With Archer, Ray and Cyril back at the manor, they are forced to explain to Malory where it all went wrong.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Cold Equation: After Ray points out that, because of the extra passenger, there's barely enough fuel to get to the landing strip, Archer selflessly volunteers to throw Cyril out to lighten the load.
  • Continuity Nod: Archer clearly remembers Cyril knocking him out with a fire extinguisher on the way to Cuba, since he warns Cyril at gunpoint not to try it again.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Krieger built a narco sub in Tunt Manor's indoor swimming pool to facilitate drug smuggling. He didn't think about building the sub outside the mansion, or a way to dismantle it; instead, he ends up despairingly blowing up the sub while it was filled with the rest of their cocaine.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Malory threatens to "literally emasculate" Krieger, he starts to explain that if she were to literally emasculate him, she would...and immediately changes the subject.
  • How We Got Here: The episode opens on a stormy night as Malory grills a banged-up Archer, Cyril and Ray about how they got back from Colombia and why they have crates full of military-grade weapons.
  • Incompetence, Inc.: Everything leading up to this episode is evidence that they are even worse drug dealers than former spies, as the ton of cocaine they originally had is lost thanks to giving it away or losing it, eating it (Pam), and blowing it up (Krieger), without any profit to show for it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Archer was willing to pull a gun on Ray and Cyril in order to avoid landing in the Everglades and to prevent them from dumping the cocaine and guns that were on board. At first, it's because of his fear of crocodiles, but he then raises the points that 1) there is most likely someone waiting at the airport who is expecting someone that's not them, 2) said someone is waiting there to receive the cocaine on the plane and won't be happy if they don't get it, and 3) keeping the guns might be good idea in light of the fact that whoever's there is probably armed. Unfortunately, the last point only gets brought up after the guns have been thrown out. He's immediately proven right when he steps off the plane and instantly takes a beanbag round to the chest.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: With almost all of the cocaine gone, and Archer returning with a shipment of weapons for San Marcos instead of money, Malory decides the group will go into arms dealing.
  • Non-Lethal Warfare: Slater shoots Archer center-mass with a beanbag round. He retains a giant bruise across most of his chest throughout the episode and is clearly in a great deal of pain.
  • Oh, Crap!: Cyril and Ray when Archer points out that there is probably someone waiting at the airport who are expecting people that are explicitly not them.
  • Running Gag: Krieger forgetting to set whatever recording device he is operating to actually record what is going on seems to be turning into this.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Cherlene spends much of the episode topless, using only her arm, a couple of ice pops and some whipped cream to cover her breasts. She was planning to have herself topless on the cover of her album, with the red, white and blue ice pops strategically positioned over her nipples. Pam had suggested using the pops internally.
  • Shout-Out: One to Planet of the Apes (1968). When asked what he did to the cocaine, he gets on his knees and responds "I blew it up! Goddamn you all to hell!"
  • The Unreveal: We never find out the terms of Ron and Malory's open marriage, and Cheryl is knocked out by her when answering his call. Then Pam's phone starts to ring...
  • When Elders Attack: After confessing that she and Ron have agreed to get back together, albeit in an open-marriage, Malory brutally smacks down Cheryl with a liquor bottle when Cheryl's phone rings and she announces that it's Ron calling her. Krieger also narrowly escapes being castrated by Malory, who wanted to make him watch her do it in a mirror!
