Recap / Archer S 14 E 4 Chill Barry

Go To

Barry's back and gives the gang the cold shoulder in their quest to put Other Barry on ice. Meanwhile, Lana deals with Zara's strange mood swings in a side mission.

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Cyril eventually gets fed up with the group badgering him and swears that he will make them pay. He gets the chance when Other Barry controls him with nanobots, but he is clearly not enjoying it.
  • Brain Uploading: It turns out that Barry uploaded his conscience into a nearby mini fridge but was caught in the destruction of the IIA building, so he could not tell the group about his resurrection.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Zara doesn't know which is crazier: That Barry represents a massive jump in artificial intelligence that can change the world, or the gang just treats it like another day at the office.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The brass knuckle that Pam gives Archer says Pamageddon.
  • Hates Rich People: Zara grew up as a poor scholarship student in an otherwise rich-dominated posh school that led her to hate all manners of rich people (which explains her irritable behavior with the posh Clarissa in the previous episode), which didn't help her any when she became a gambler with debt problems and she tried to murder the head debt collector but is now on his radar all the way from Europe.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: When Other Barry begins poking fun at Cyril, Pam and Krieger are quick to come to his defense because only they are allowed to poke fun at Cyril. Surprisingly, this touches Cyril.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After the gang stops making ice puns at Barry's expense, he shoots Archer with an "ice cold" retort and says it's only okay when he says it.
  • It's All About Me: What Zara's initial mood swings make it look like to be when she briefly believes she wasn't selected for the main mission until she learns she got picked for the side mission instead.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Zara is very much shocked to learn the Agency is dealing with Barry while he's in a mini refrigerator, and she only panics on the possibility about a future when AI starts to screw humanity.
  • Mood-Swinger: Zara is especially irritable by the beginning of the episode all because debt collector hitmen from Europe are coming to take her down. Infiltrating a gala full of rich people only makes it worse.
  • Not So Above It All: Zara reveals several things that bring her several notches down from her high horse: she's a compulsive gambler who tried to assassinate the head of her debt collection agency, she Hates Rich People because she was a poor scholarship student at her posh school, and she "admits" she has issues trying to control her mood swings. At the very least, Lana helps her feel like home because she's the kind of person who fits with the rest of the Agency having their own issues as well.
  • Riddle for the Ages: The gang wonders who keeps bringing Other Barry back, to which Barry mentions a very complicated story involving being able to dream and seeing glimpses of the future where he and Other Barry either try to kill humanity or save it...or it could be some dude (or something).
  • Shout-Out: As Other Barry melts in radioactive waste, he gives Archer a thumbs down.
