Recap / Archer S 12 E 5 Shots

Go To

Archer and the gang celebrate another barely successful mission.

Tropes:

  • Almost Dead Guy: Carl, the warehouse guard who was shot. The other two guards drag him along instead of taking him to a hospital. He ends up bleeding to death.
  • Back for the Dead: Shortly after Prince Fawad returns, he is later seen dead during Lana's attempt to have sex with him. Subverted as he was actually passed out and no one bothered to check his pulse before attempting to dump his body in a nearby river.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Pam announces that she and the other women of the agency (plus Sandra of the UN and Kreiger), will go on a "Pampage". They are later seen wearing t-shirts with the term.
    • Sandra from the UN congratulates the gang for destroying a lab facility that risks killing seals from the city harbor. Near the end, they push a monster truck Made of Explodium into the same harbor, then she furiously states the chemicals in the truck can potentially kill ten times that amount.
    • The agents have no idea what the microchips they stole were for at the start, and Lana states that she's not responsible for identifying the use of every tech they find. In the end, during Sandra's What the Hell, Hero? moment, Lana believes that the microchips were for landmines.
  • The Bus Came Back: Prince Fawad Fawaz returns after Season 6, and he recognizes Lana, who had seduced him once in order to get back at Archer during a complicated CIA assignment.
  • Call-Back: At the space observatory, Archer tells Cyril that he was a space captain for one year during his coma.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: When Pam says "Pampage" and no one seems to get the meaning, she says it's a play-on words of "Pam" and "Rampage".
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The three guards pursuing the gang might be looking for a prime opportunity to kill the ones that crossed their employer and get even with the Agency for attacking them in the first place. But the guards don't want to commit a murder close to where their own families live, on the same streets their children play on.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The tavern the gang goes to is literally named "Tavern".
  • Harmless Villain: The three guards from the warehouse the Agency stole the microchips from are utterly incompetent in trying to hunt them down.
  • Ignored Epiphany: It would appear that Archer's "Reason You Suck" Speech from last season's finale didn't stick well as Pam and Cheryl say that he is responsible for the team falling back when he woke up from his coma. That being said, they're not completely wrong either, as Archer's constant verbal abuse has taken its toll on his mental health, though unlike them, Archer acknowledges it.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: Archer discovers what Cyril finds fun; a planetarium filled with elders, a toy car race and playing tabletop Warhammer with a bunch of teens. He does seem to have some enjoyment out of it.
  • Lack of Empathy: There are three warehouse workers who are tasked with pursuing the agents who stole the microchips. Two of them ignore their partner Carl, who eventually succumbs to a gunshot wound. They simply move on instead of taking him to a hospital right away.
  • My Local: The agents return here when Sandra offers drinks for a job well done. Unfortunately, they believe they have outgrown this, and try to find something more thrilling to do.
  • Made of Explodium: The monster truck seemed to have been filled with some kind of combustible fluid, courtesy of Krieger. When it hits the river, it blows up, much to Archer's shock.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: See Harmless Villain above.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Lana calls Robert in the Pub in hopes of having some fun but becomes too busy talking to another man before he arrives. He at least has the benefit of the doubt that Lana isn't really cheating on him before leaving.
  • Noodle Implements: The microchips. Nobody can remember what they do.
  • Noodle Incident: The Agency accomplishes a mission to steal some microchips but is left with some considerable damage on their way out. These include the destruction of a warehouse, a yacht, and a couple of [empty] school buses. Malory is not happy.
  • Of Corpse He's Alive: Krieger suggests this with Jeremy (who is still in a coma) but is immediately shot down. When Fawad (apparently) dies of an overdose, they prop him up and put sunglasses on him to get past his security, then stage a monster truck crash to Make It Look Like an Accident... until he wakes up, that is.
  • Only Mostly Dead: Fawad seemingly overdoses on designer drugs and the gang are stuck with Disposing of a Body. He wakes up in the staged accident. Lana, Pam and Cheryl were too high and freaked out to check his pulse.
  • Person As Noun: When half the gang is unable to find excitement in their usual pub, Pam has them join her on a night on the town which she dubs a "Pampage", a mix of her name and the word "rampage".
  • Precision F-Strike: Malory delivers this while reviewing the results of a recent mission. Bonus points for being uncensored on TV.
Archer: I think the phrase you're all looking for is "mission accomplished."
Malory: The phrase I'm looking for would fill my swear jar to the fucking brim! (Sees Cheryl handing over The Swear Jar) Damn it.
  • Skewed Priorities: The warehouse guards (at least two of the three) are far more interested in getting revenge on the Agency's gang rather than taking medical aid for their injuries, especially Carl, who is still clearly bleeding to death and has been for a whole day.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: One of the three guards, Carl, was shot when the Agency robbed the warehouse and is in need of medical attention, but his cohorts refuse to drive him to the hospital. When the guards are hot on the gang's trail, Carl dies.
  • The Swear Jar: Shown at the beginning by Cheryl to be filled with quarters. She makes Malory place one in after her Precision F-Strike.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Archer slowly realizes that his frequent abuse at Cyril may have finally broken him, especially after becoming a badass agent during Archer's coma. He decides to hang out with him, against his better judgement. It turns out he more or less enjoys himself and prepares to acknowledge Cyril as a person... until he gets a call from the others to take care of an incident involving Lana and Prince Fawad.
Archer: Oh, thank God... I almost bonded with Cyril.
  • Viking Funeral: The gang attempt this with a monster truck when Prince Fawad seemingly dies. When they see him wake up, Archer saves him before the truck explodes.
  • Wham Episode: Not for the series as a whole, but this episode is essentially where Lana's and Robert's marriage cements its downward spiral; when Robert sees Lana talking to another man at the bar; while he gives her the benefit of the doubt initially, it plants the seed which would result in their relationship imploding completely by the end of the season.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sandra catches up with the agents after being left behind at a night club and sees a greenish cloud of smoke coming from a truck they crashed into a river, expecting the environmental harm it can cause to the harbor.
Sandra: You realize the chemicals you dumped in the ocean will probably kill ten times the seals you saved.
Archer: In our defense, going out was your idea.
Sandra: Because I didn't know you were monsters!
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: When Archer is called on for help by the others, he is relieved because he almost bonded with Cyril and Cyril looks utterly affronted since he said it near him. That being said, he does still show some respect towards him when he saves them for a canister filled with nerve gas, giving him the nickname "Murderfoot".
