Recap / Archer S 10 E 8 Cubert

Go To

Archer is convinced a mysterious object is causing the crew to act strangely.

  • Aborted Arc: In-Universe. The episode starts with the crew finding and studying a mysterious space cube. Then, when it disappears, they try to find it. Halfway through the episode, everyone except Archer has seemingly forgot about it. It turns out that Archer's own mind has abandoned the plot entirely as he starts seeing things.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Two-fold: While in the brig, ranting about how how everything around him is becoming crazy, Archer graciously accepts a drink from Woodhouse... which he then downs entirely after realizing what just happened.
Archer: (cautiously) Wait... Are... a-ar-are you supposed to be here?
    Woodhouse: invoked...no, sir.
    Archer: Huh... now that's disconcerning.
    Woodhouse: Yes, sir.
(Archer proceeds to down his glass)
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: invoked After it clicks for Archer that Woodhouse is in the brig with him, he cautiously asks if he's "supposed to be here".
  • Noodle Incident: The ranch tub idea. No other explanation is given other than it was a terrible idea.
  • Ominous Cube: Nothing is ever explained about the cube itself. We get a brief glimpse of its surface changing before it disappears, but after that it's completely forgotten about.
  • Sanity Slippage: Archer starts losing his mind in the second half, as everyone has forgotten about the space cube they have found and he believes they're pulling one over him. It becomes worse when he sees his crew as they were during the ISIS days. He is sent to the brig after attacking Lana. It's only when he starts seeing Woodhouse that Archer starts to realize his problem.
  • Unexpected Character: In-Universe, twice.
    • TV's Michael Gray makes an appearance in a locker.
    • Woodhouse, who was never a character in this version of Archer, makes an appearance at the end, showing how far Archer is slipping...
  • Wham Episode: Archer seems to finally be waking up...
  • Wham Shot: The episode runs similarly to the others for the first half, up to the point that the crew splits up to locate the missing cube. While Archer is searching the lockers, Lana asks him a question. He looks up... and sees her in her real-life appearance for a moment. From that point on he begins seeing the crew as their real-life selves.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Moreso than usual to Alien. All of the story beats are almost scene-for-scene right up until the infamous "Magazine Rape" scene, at which point the plot recenters around Archer's degrading sanity.
