Opening Line: "Miss Cellany"- Yakko

Very Special Opening: The episode starts with the Warners explaining that this episode will be special. What makes it so special? Wakko's not wearing pants!

Animaniacs Stew: In the Animaniacs test kitchen, the Warners toss the show's cast to mix up the characters to see what they get...

In the Garden of Mindy: Brain, replacing Buttons as Mindy's pet, tries to conquer the world while putting up with Mindy's antics.

Pinky and the Cat: Rita joins Pinky at Acme Labs.

We Been Mixin' Up the Scripts: The Warners are at a conveyor belt, singing about how they're mixing up the scripts for the episode.

No Place Like Homeless: Runt and Pesto have been paired together to find a home, which they may get if they can deal with an old lady's parrot.

Katie Ka-Boo: Katie Kaboom brings home her boyfriend...Chicken Boo!

We Found This Old Computer: The Warners jam characters into an old computer.

Dottie the Squirrel: Dot takes Slappy's place, ending the short for calling her "Dottie".

Baghdad Cafe: With Slappy Squirrel replacing Dot, much to her chagrin the Warners match wits with the Iraqi dictator "So Darned Insane" (!). At least until Slappy loses her patience...

Wheel of Morality: You can teach an old dog new tricks, but you can't teach Madonna to act.

This episode has examples of:

  • A Very Special Episode: And what makes this episode special?
Wakko: I'm not wearing any pants!
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: Brain becomes one to Mindy.
  • Cut Short: In-Universe and Played for Laughs.
    • Both "Pinky and the Cat" and "Dottie the Squirrel" end abruptly just as they begin; the first because Rita ate Pinky, the latter because Dot throws dynamite at the camera for the chorus calling her Dottie.
    • "Baghdad Café" is only halfway through when Slappy has had enough and quits after she fumbles Dot's "Princess Angelina" catchphrase and doesn't want to bother going through it again.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Dot does not like being called "Dottie". In the prologue to "Baghdad Café", she tosses a bomb when Yakko and Wakko continue to call her by this name.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: For this episode, the characters from various segments of the show are mixed up into unusual pairings. So the Brain is Mindy's pet instead of Buttons, Runt hangs out with Pesto from the Goodfeathers, Dot trades places with Slappy, and so on. During "Katie Ka-Boo", we also get one for the normal Chicken Boo segments, as the Ka-Booms all see through Boo's disguise instead of only one person- except Katie, of course, which naturally makes her angry.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In "In the Garden of Mindy", Mindy's Mom leaves Brain in charge of Mindy so that she can go to a better parenting conference.
  • I Am Not Weasel: In "No Place Like Homeless", Pesto is shown to take offense to being called a dog, which is in contrast to Rita, who willingly lets Runt call her a dog because she knows he hates cats.
  • Instantly Defeathered Bird: In "No Place Like Homeless", Crackers, the pet parrot of Mrs. Mumphead loses all of his feathers after Pesto beats him up.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Played for Laughs in "Bagdhad Cafe" when Yakko explains that the Warner Sister, in this case being played by Slappy, is adopted.
  • Insubstantial Ingredients: How do you make Animaniacs Stew?
A dash of Pinky and the Brain,
    A cup of Slappy Squirrel,
    A tablespoon of Goodfeathers,
    Add Rita, Runt, then swirl,
We add a pinch of Hippos,
    Buttons and Mindy, too,
Now top it off with Skippy Squirrel.
    What's that make?
    Animaniacs Stew!
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Slappy snaps at the end of her segment with Yakko and Wakko and decides that next time she's gonna get script approval.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: So Darn Insane from "Baghdad Café" is an obvious parody of then Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
  • Oh, Crap!: Pinky when Rita is ready to eat him.
  • Pesky Pigeons: In "No Place Like Homeless", Mrs. Mumphead is shown to dislike pigeons, thinking that they suck blood, and whenever she sees Pesto, she whacks him with her broom.
  • Pet Dress-Up: In "In the Garden of Mindy", when Brain explains his plan to take over the world to Mindy, Mindy puts a doll's dress on him.
  • Pokémon Speak: All Crackers can say is "Crackers".
  • Rhyming with Itself: This line from the Warner Siblings during the prologue to "In the Garden of Mindy":
    They're Mindy and the Brain,
    Mindy and the Brain,
    One's a small child,
    and the other's... the Brain!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Slappy tries to leave when she is introduced. In the end, Slappy finally snaps and ends her short early with some dynamite before stomping off.
  • Shout-Out: The logo "An Animaniacs Special Presentation" is a parody of the "CBS Special Presentation" logo from the 1970s and 1980s, as seen on many of the classic Rankin/Bass Christmas specials as well as the Peanuts and Garfield specials.
  • Stink Bomb: In "In the Garden of Mindy", Brain's plan to take over the world is to use the manure in Mindy's backyard to construct a stink bomb so large, it will be spread across the Earth's capitals, and when it drives the government officials away, Brain will take their place to seize control. Unfortunately, thanks to Mindy's antics, the only victim of the stink bomb is Brain himself.
Mindy: Ugh! Brain smell like poo-poo!
  • Stuck in the Doorway: Happens to Flavio when he substitutes for Skippy in "Baghdad Café".
  • Swallowed Whole: Pinky's fate in "Pinky and the Cat".
Rita: So far, this is my favorite episode.
  • To the Tune of...: "We've Been Mixin' Up the Scripts" is set to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad".
We've been mixin' up the scripts
    All the livelong show
    Putting characters together
    Who normally wouldn't go!
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: Slappy complains about the script in "Baghdad Café".
Slappy: Next time, I get script approval.

Closing Tower Gag: "AAAAAAAAAAGH!!! THERE'S A HORRIBLE BUG ON YOUR SHOULDER! AAAAGH! Just kidding! (laughter)"- Yakko, Wakko, and Dot
