Tropes:
- The Bus Came Back: Valeriana, the one-armed newt vendor from "Bizarre Bazaar" all the way back in Season 1, finally returns this season, along with her pet bird Leander.
- Comes Great Responsibility: The quality Valeriana was testing Anne for was the responsibility to go with her compassion.
- Continuity Nod: During the final confrontation, Valeriana brings up several of Anne's mistakes and selfish actions, like faking sick to get out of work, taking Bessie the snail for a joy-ride, and taking Hop Pop's wallet for a girl's day out with Polly (though Valeriana claims she stole his wallet, when she actually asked him for it, something that Anne even points out). Anne is confused and creeped out as to how Valeriana could even know these things given she wasn't present for any of them.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Marcy and the Plantars screaming at cat videos on Marcy's phone makes Anne think they're in danger, so she grabs her gem before it can finish charging and tells Valeriana to send her back. Given what happens in "True Colors" thanks to Anne not charging her gem all the way, it's subverted.
- Right-Hand Cat: Anne reasons that Valeriana is evil because she owns a parrot. She's half-right; Valeriana has ulterior motives, but she is ultimately on the side of good.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Valeriana gives a long one to Anne, initially listing just her faults during the episode's trip. However, things take a turn when the speech goes on to mention things Valeriana was never present for. Turns out, it was part of the test to ensure that Anne really was as kind and true as she appeared to be.
- Save the Villain: Even though Valeriana has been antagonizing her the whole episode, Anne still saves her despite having nothing to gain from it. Doing this is the final test to prove her worth.
- Secret Test of Character: Pretty much the moment she leaves Valeriana's tent, Anne is tested over and over to see if she is worthy.
- Sequel Hook: Anne leaves the temple before her stone is fully charged, and unlike Marcy, her Eye Color Change only seems to drain halfway because of it.
- Wham Shot: The screen around the powered gems fades to black, and Anne's gem flickers on and off because she didn't let it charge completely.
