This episode has examples of:

  • Downer Ending: After spending the entire episode lying to the villagers in order to save their stand, it ends with Hop Pop having lost almost everyone's trust after exposing his manipulation. Giving back all the money, the Plantars are forced to close their stand. Hop Pop even sums up the trope when he realizes he is now unemployed.
Hop Pop: Oh, frog! I'm unemployed!
  • Everybody Has Standards: Anne might have come up with the idea to sell All-Natural Snake Oil, but she thoroughly objects to putting actual, literal garbage in it.
  • Honesty Is the Best Policy: Hop Pop prided himself on his honesty, and the sign on the Plantar's food stand reads "Always honest". When a rent raise threatens the stand, under Anne's suggestion he starts to sell Plantar's Potions, making outrageous claims to get people to buy. Eventually, he goes too far when he starts substituting actual garbage into the potions when the ingredients run out, saying that people will buy it anyway. But when Mrs. Croaker, the stand's oldest and most loyal customer, comes to buy one, Hop Pop can't bring himself to do it and confesses. In the end, he loses his stand and has to work to get the townspeople's trust again.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Hop Pop starts to get more and more carried away, and eventually gets to the point of adding literal garbage to the potions.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: "To Hop Pop and the Plantars! The most honest folks in the business!"
Anne: (winces) Oof. Even I felt that one.
  • Snake Oil Salesman: Hop Pop becomes one, hyping the curative qualities of his Plantar's Potion, which is little more than vegetable juice. But then he takes things too far and starts making it out of literal garbage.
  • Spit Take: When Hop Pop confesses to putting garbage in the latest batch of Plantar's Potion, several of his customers spit it out in disgust.
  • Tempting Fate: Anne believes no one would pay 20 coppers for Hop Pop's garbage potion, she's immediately trampled by a mob of customers.
  • Wham Episode: The Plantar family loses their vegetable stand, leaving them without a source of income.
