  • Chekhov's Gun: The precariously stacked equipment locker.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Stacey continues to develop a romantic interest in Spud, remembering his name when speaking, suggesting they kiss, and running to inform Jake and Trixie when #88 and #89 attack him.
  • Frog Men: Spud becomes a downplayed version.
  • Genre Savvy: Spud has become so used to being the screw-up who draws the ire of monsters that he immediately calls his triggering a swamp monster to attack him as soon as he sits down on it.
  • Guile Hero: Upon losing his frog powers, Spud decides to rely on his underutilized intelligence in order to be a hero, starting with tricking Brad into opening the same equipment locker Spud previously dealt with, dropping a large assortment of heavy sports balls on him.
  • Hurricane of Euphemisms: Huntsboy #89 tries to do this in regards to the destruction of the Huntsclan. He doesn't make it very far.
Huntsboy #89: What's shakin', magical chumps? As you might have heard, your fiercest enemy—the Huntsclan—has been wiped out, obliterated, finito-ed...
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Spud spends a majority of the first part of the episode envious of the benefits Jake's magical powers bring him, such as increased strength, respect, and gifts from the magical creatures he protects.
  • Meaningful Name: Spud describes the antidote as tasting like "wintergreen," similar to the last name of his crush, Stacey Wintergrin.
  • Picked Last: Spud is so unpopular during baseball that Brad picks a kid with narcolepsy over him, and Stacey forces him to play right-field so far out that he's in the parking lot. And he still winds up losing them the game.
  • Red Sock Ruins the Laundry: Spud accidentally stained his boxers pink after he left pink gelatin powder in the pockets when he washed them.
  • Sequel Episode: Could be considered one to "Homecoming", as it deals with the aftermath of #88 and #89 escaping the fate the rest of the Huntsclan met, showing them becoming actual threats.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Spud lets his genius intellect slip some when he's telling a joke to the other students.
Spud: And so the snail says, "No! That's just my mucopolysaccharide slime trail!"
  • The Stinger: Spud sings the "Spudical Dragon" theme song.
  • Superpowers For A Day: For Spud, who becomes a frog-like superhero.
  • The Virus: Getting bitten by a magical frog results in Spud gaining the abilities and partial appearance of one.
