Despite Stan's objections, Francine buys Steve the dog he has always wantednote . However, when the dog suffers a horrific accident, Stan refuses to take the pup off life support. Meanwhile, after seeing Stan's dog on life support, Hayley and Jeff see a lawyer to plan out their last wishes and wills — and Hayley discovers that Jeff holds the rights to Blues Travelers' first album master tapes, which he gave to the daughter of an old woman he married years ago.

Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: Betty forces Stan to kill Freddy... so they could move into their new apartment.
  • Animal Jingoism: Kisses ends up being horribly maimed when a crew of pirate cats in a hot air balloon land their vehicle on him, laugh at him, and fly off.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Ultimately Stan has to put Kisses out of his misery, but the dog is shown having a great in time Dog Heaven.
  • Body Horror: Dr. Lizzy's procedure does manage to keep Kisses alive, but she ends up having to remove his destroyed eyeballs and move what's left to "where his testicles used to be", replaces his skull with a softball mitt, his hind left left with a chicken drumstick, and his right one with a frog leg, and wires him to a car battery that sends out regular jolts to keep the dog's ravaged carcass in motion.
  • Jerkass:
    • While Roger isn't usually a nice guy, he's downright cruel in this episode. His jealousy of the new family dog reaches the point that when it's mangled and on life support (to the absolute shock and horror of the rest of the family), Roger laughs.
    • Betty forced a young Stan to kill his dog Freddy, not because Freddy was sick but because their new apartment building didn't allow dogs. She's even shown smoking while Stan was heartbroken.
  • Series Continuity Error: Steve claims he apparently never had a dog, despite two earlier episodes having Steve with a dog, albeit one of which Stan killed by accident. When Francine points this out, Stan bluntly states she's obviously remembering dreams she had.
  • Shoot the Dog:
    • As a child, Stan was forced by his mom to kill Freddy because he apparently had an incurable illness. However, Betty actually did this because dogs weren't allowed in their new apartment building.
    • After the doctor horribly botches up Kisses' medical procedure, Stan blows Kisses up with dynamite.
