Recap / American Dad! S6E3 "Home Adrone"

Go To

Steve is left in charge of the house while the rest of the family looks at colleges for Hayley. However, he ends up causing a security breach when he accidentally activates a CIA drone.

Tropes:

  • And You Thought It Was a Game: Steve and his friends think the drone’s controls are just a flight simulation game until they see it out the window.
  • Bait-and-Switch: As the family leaves, Steve reassures Francine that everything will be fine. It then cuts to the house on fire, only Steve is watching a show in which people send pictures of their houses so that the host can make a scale model and burn it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Roger's persona for the trip is a little girl, who naturally can't be served alcohol.
  • Dope Slap: Snot does this to Barry when they go into Stan's study.
Steve: That's my dad's study. No one's allowed in there.
    Barry: Not even your dad?
(Snot slaps him on the back of his head)
Snot: Remember I told you being stupid was gonna start getting painful?
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Steve starts to notice that the setting for the "game" looks a lot like his neighborhood, until he realizes it's a real drone.
  • Eye Scream: Steve and his friends throw paper airplanes in the house. Barry's hits him in the eye and he falls down the stairs.
  • Overly Long Gag: Stan moving his briefcase (the control unit for the drone) back and forth across his desk, insisting it wasn't where he left it.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the drone is wrecked, Toshi says that he was at the library all day and leaves.
  • Serendipitous Survival: Thinking the drone is really a video game, Steve gets ready to blow up a plane at the airport before Snot tells him to save his missiles until they find something "really cool" to destroy. Turns out the targeted plane had Steve's entire family on board.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Hayley's trip to look at colleges. After Steve activates the drone, he flies it over the airport, grounding the plane because it's an unidentified object. When Roger realizes he can't drink alcohol because of his little girl persona, he decides to dress up as Stan, after Stan leaves the plane and is denied reentry. However, the disappearance of the "girl" triggers an air marshal's suspicions, grounding the plane for several more hours. At the end of the episode, the plane is cleared for takeoff, until Stan and Steve fly over the airport again on the drone and ground it once again.
  • Shout-Out: Barry makes a reference to Lost when he sees the drone.
"They found us! We're getting off the island!"
  • Swiss-Cheese Security: Steve is able to activate the drone without so much as being prompted for a password.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Steve is told by his parents not to have anyone over, but Snot goads him into letting his friends come in.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Played with. Roger makes the mistake of posing Stan and Francine's youngest daughter, only to then have his request for liquor and industrial solvent be seen as a joke by the flight attendant due to his supposed age.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The air marshal threatens to shoot a kid unless Roger's little girl persona shows up.
