Recap / American Dad S 5 E 9 Stan Time

Go To

Frustrated by not having enough time for himself, Stan starts taking pills which allow him to stay awake all night. He's discovered by Francine, who decided to pursue her own interests. Meanwhile, Roger and Steve try to write a porno.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: Stan laments that he never has the time to read The Hunt for Red October, falling asleep at only the second sentence. When he starts taking the pills, he finishes the book and promptly throws it away, clearly unimpressed.
  • Captain Oblivious: Roger and Steve try to write a porno while at a diner but are tapped for inspiration, ignoring all the innuendos and sexual overtones that the young, attractive waitresses are using.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Dick says that he's watching every movie ever made, mentioning Martin Mull in Clue. Martin Mull voices Father Donovan on the show.
  • G-Rated Drug: Downplayed. The pills that allow Stan to stay awake all night apparently aren't addictive and don't have any negative side effects. Also they can apparently let you fly, but only once.
  • It's Been Done: The adult movie producer tells Roger and Steve that people are tired of the ideas they keep trying to pitchnote  and tells them to try and come up with something original. They fail.
  • Pizza Boy Special Delivery: Roger keeps using this cliché when writing porn. Steve suggests an IT guy, but ends up turning in a hard sci-fi script that involves 62 pages of a rocket refueling.
Steve: How are people supposed to be invested in a month-long intergalactic orgy if the rocket has insufficient fuel cells?! You wanna talk reality, let's talk reality!
  • Tempting Fate: While talking with Dick late at night, Stan says that the last thing he wants is to share the pills with the kids or, God forbid, Francine. Then he sees Francine is standing right next to him.
