Go To

Terry's father is coming for a visit, but doesn't know that his son is gay. Meanwhile, Roger buys alcohol for Steve and his friends.

Tropes:

  • Brutal Honesty: Tank bluntly admits he had no inkling of Terry's sexuality, doesn't care if it makes him happy, and knows it's not his choice but still finds it utterly disgusting.
  • The Casanova: Tank Bates is described as a notorious womanizer who slept with all the cheerleaders, the coach's daughter, and the announcer's wife, shattering their family.
  • Dirty Coward: Terry completely balks when he tries to tell Tank that he's gay, instead claiming Francine is his girlfriend with Libby as their illegitimate child and Greg and Stan are the gay couple across the street.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: While having drinks with Greg and Bullock, Stan has no idea what Greg's anecdotes are about, showing that he's the unsophisticated partner that he accused Francine of being.
  • Hard Truth Aesop:
    • Some people don't have a reason to be prejudiced or homophobic, they just choose to be. Tank makes it clear he understands how homosexuality works, is not a closeted queer man, and doesn't care at all that his son has no choice in how he identifies, he still hates it.
    • If people in your family can't accept you for your orientation, then sometimes it's better to just cut them out as soon as possible. Terry delayed the inevitable by lying about Francine being his girlfriend, and Stan's actions were ultimately just him ripping off the band-aid when Terry wouldn't.
  • Hate Sink: Tank makes it very clear that he knows about homosexuality, and has never had any upsetting experience to explain his homophobia. The moment he learns that Terry is gay, he just disowns him out of nowhere, so it's very clear that he's not a character meant to be rooted for.
  • Hypocrite: After Roger explains the dangers of underage drinking, by publicly shaming Steve for dating an ugly girl, he offers to get him some beers to calm down.
  • I Have No Son!: Upon learning that Terry is homosexual, Tank disowns him right then and there.
  • Misplaced Retribution: By the very end of the episode, after Tank makes it clear he'll never be okay with Terry's homosexuality, Terry tries to lay into Stan for all of this happening as if it's his fault Tank is a stubborn homophobe. Francine manages to stop Terry, pointing out Stan was the one who tried to help Terry this whole time even if it didn't work.
  • Shout-Out: Stan and Greg start singing "Maria" from West Side Story when they get an invitation to one of Bullock's cocktail parties, something Stan had been wanting to attend for years.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Francine and Greg were livid when Stan drunkenly outed Terry to his father. Although when Terry starts to scream at Stan after Tank makes it clear beyond a doubt he won't accept his son being gay, Francine steps forward and defends Stan. As she puts it, even if Stan messed up, he was still trying to help and ultimately it's better for Terry to let go of Tank after seeing his father absolutely will not let go of his prejudice.
