Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: Meg grabs her shotgun while Francine's down and pulls the trigger... at Jim, who was about to kill Stan.
  • Behind the Black: Stan and Jim burst into the living room fighting while Francine is calmly sitting on the couch. Stan begs her for help, to which she says she's having some trouble of her own and the camera pulls out to show Meg sitting in a chair aiming a shotgun at her.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Jim is apparently very well endowed, The speedo Jim wears makes it very apparent he's well endowed down there, with Francine getting Distracted by the Sexy when looking at his crotch. Reginald even nicknames Jim "Prince Walnuts" due to it.
  • Buddy Cop Show:
    • Steve and Roger spend the whole episode working out who gets which tropes in their Wheels and the Legman personas.
Steve: I'm good cop and Roger's bad cop. I get to make the puns, but Roger can be sarcastic, as long as it's not too schticky.
Roger: I get to have the troubled past, but Steve always gets the girl.
Steve: Unless she's a bad guy, in which case Roger gets her so that she can betray him, leading to a gunfight on the roof of an opera house.
      Roger: Or a theater.
    • After arriving home and seeing the gruesome remains of Jim, Roger declares that they're a network show rather than cable and thus no one actually dies.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Stan and Francine calmly apologize to each other while fighting Jim and Meg, respectively.
  • Cure Your Gays: While on the stakeout, Jim mentions sleeping with a coworker who was a lesbian, much to Stan's surprise.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Both Stan and Francine failed to realize that their "back-up spouses" will do whatever it takes to have them both for themselves.
  • Flexibility Equals Sex Ability: Jim is apparently quite flexible due to practicing tai chi, a fact that Francine seems to find very attractive.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Steve and Roger do this during their interrogation of Klaus.
Roger: Something about your story seems... fishy.
Steve: [...] Klaus, you're going to face the scales of Lady Justice!
    Roger: We know you’re gill-ty!
Steve: Like it or not, fish, you're on the hook for this one!
Roger: Your days of crime are H2Over!
Steve: That doesn't even make sense!
    Roger: Fish live in water!
Klaus: ENOUGH! I confess. Just please no more puns.
  • Intimate Lotion Application: Francine gets one of Stan's co-workers Jim to become her "backup husband". Stan learns this when he sees them both the poolside, with Francine seductively asking Jim to rub sun lotion on her back, knowing it will make Stan jealous.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Jim tries to kill Stan by kicking him out of a helicopter over Afghanistan. Later, Meg was about to kill Francine when they were interrupted by Stan and Jim fighting.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Francine gets so peeved to learn Stan has a backup wife that she gets back at him by getting a backup husband of her own: Jim.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Stan survives his fall in Afghanistan by landing on the world's largest felafel just as it was being judged by the Guinness Book of World Records. He gets back to America with the judge by offering to have the "most spontaneous transatlantic balloon trip," and when that fails, he threatens set the record for "shooting her the most times in the face."
  • Poor Communication Kills: Hayley claims that her "shuffle" was missing but fails to mention that it was actually an iPod shuffle, which Roger had with him the entire time.
  • Properly Paranoid: When Stan goes to Meg's office to tell her the back-up marriage plan is off, she tells him she thought he was joking with the implication Stan took her far too seriously. Then we find Meg holding Francine at gunpoint determined to have Stan to herself, making this one of the rare times Stan knew what he was talking about.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Downplayed. Meg offers to do a crown for Francine after kicking out one of her teeth. Considering Meg's trying to kill Francine to get Stan, Francine bluntly points out they're obviously not going to her for dental work anymore.
    Francine: My tooth!
Meg: Oh I can put a crown on for you.
Francine: (indignant) I'm not going to you anymore!
Meg: Good luck getting your x-rays back, bitch!
  • Sex God: Jim manages to get himself and Stan to escape jail in Colombia by seducing and sleeping with all the female guards, and being so good in bed that he convinces them to let him go. Stan later claims he was quite impressed with his sexual stamina.
Stan: I was on his heels as he porked our way through 200 miles of jungle. His hips never stopped moving. It was magnificent.
  • Sexy Surfacing Shot: Jim climbs out of Stan's pool in a seductive manner while he's clad in only a speedo.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Roger was the one who stole Hayley's iPod shuffle; he misinterpreted her use of the word "shuffle".
  • The Unfair Sex: Discussed. Francine's clearly unhappy that Stan has a backup wife prepared if she dies, but as he points out he never went as far as Francine does with parading Jim around their house in a speedo showing off his giant bulge. She surprisingly ends up paying for this when Jim falls for her for real and tries to kill Stan, while also finding herself held at gunpoint by Meg.
  • Villainous Rescue: Just when it looks like Meg's about to blow Francine's head off, we see Meg actually shot Jim in the chest before he killed Stan.
Meg: No one shoots my back-up husband!
  • Yandere: Both Jim and Meg become this to Francine and Stan by trying to kill the other's spouse to have them to themselves.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Stan does this to Jim, having just beaten him home as Jim was about to inform Francine of Stan's death.
