Recap / American Dad S 20 E 21 A Little Extra Scratch

Go To

Francine learns that Hayley has extra money from selling pharmaceutical products and tries to join in. Meanwhile, Stan loses all his money, and thanks to Roger, he becomes a model for stock photos.

Tropes:

  • Ascended Meme: A number of YouTube videos riff on the opening by having Stan sleeping through his "good morning song." In this episode, he's laying in bed, worried about his new financial woes, while the song plays and the family is waiting downstairs for him.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Stan decides to invest everything in pornographic pogs, thinking it will be successful, only to end up at risk of losing the house.
  • Epic Fail: The Smiths almost lose their house because of Stan's horrible investment in pornographic pogs.
  • Facial Horror: Stan's face completely collapses after Roger slaps him one too many times. It's then held together with duct tape for another commercial.
  • Gilligan Cut: Stan says to himself that the family must never know that he's lost all their money. Then it cuts to Steve and Francine watching him from the kitchen, and Steve nonchalantly says that Stan's investment in porn pogs must have gone tits up.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The pills are made from armadillo mucus. While they do cure arthritis, they also attract predators.
  • I Warned You: Stan's financial planner warned him, repeatedly, not to invest everything in porn pogs.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Klaus mentions that no one has been keeping him informed on what the rest of the family is doing.
  • Manchild: Jeff asks Hayley for money so he can go to a Scholastic book fair at school. She warns him not to get any Goosebumps books because they'll give him nightmares.
  • Money Dumb: Stan invests everything in pornographic pogs, thinking that those who had pogs are now adults and will buy them. Naturally, such a terrible idea was such a horrible investment that Stan faces the loss of his house.
  • Opening Shout-Out: A positively hilarious one, combined with Ascended Meme. Faced with losing the house after an investment Gone Horribly Wrong, the opening sequence features Stan lying in bed with a Thousand-Yard Stare, unmoving, as the intro music plays (not unlike all those YouTube videos that parody the opening sequence). After a while of waiting, Francine remarks that Stan probably isn't coming downstairs, while Roger (who is dressed as Evel Knievel still waiting in Stan's car) asks what's taking so long, and that he "has shit to do".
  • Running Gag: Everyone comments on Hayley making "a little extra scratch" with a slew of money slang.
  • Special Edition Title: The opening has Stan still in bed, completely shocked that he lost all his money. The family is waiting for him in the living room and Roger waits for him in the car, with all of them wondering where he is.
  • Tempting Fate: Stan says how he came from poverty and the rest of the family will be fine thanks to his financial prowess. Then he gets a call from his planner to tell him that he's lost everything.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Stan gets one after realizing he's lost all his money.

Stan Doesn't Get Out of Bed

After Stan's broker tells him he is about to lose the house, Stan is way too distraught to sing the theme song that he stays in bed wide-eyed and grey-haired. Klaus, Hayley, Steve and Francine are still in their positions for the opening waiting for him to leap down the stairs. When Hayley gets paged, she tells Steve to put the peace sign on Stan's back for her. Roger is still waiting in Stan's car dressed as Evel Knievel saying he's got "shit to do".
