Recap / American Dad S 1 E 2 Threat Levels

Go To

Stan brings home a deadly virus causing the CIA to put the family under quarantine. Although they didn’t die, Francine then gets a job in the real estate business.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Stan is driving while hearing Dick's ominous warning "Your very manhood is at stake!" Until it's revealed that Dick is actually in the car with him while repeating himself.
Stan: Okay, that's it. We're not going to carpool anymore.
    • Stan's rant to Francine about Greg and Terry moving in across the street sounds typical of a homophobe who can't stand to be around gays. Then he reveals he objects to members of the liberal media moving into the neighborhood and doesn't even realize they are gay.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When Steve is explaining his plan to get a Gamestation, Toshi's mother looks much like an older, female version of him. Her design in "Weiner of our Discontent" is very different.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Smith family watch the first season of 24 on DVD.
    • Donald Trump makes an appearance demanding payment for Stan saying "You're fired!" He later shows up again when Stan says "You were fired," but Stan shoots him down exclaiming "That's passive past tense Trump, you don't own that!"
  • Skewed Priorities: After being told that they only have a day to live, Stan decides that they should spend it all watching the first season of 24.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Barry thinks they should sell one of Toshi's cameras to get the money for a Gamestation. Steve explains that the plan is to make low-budget videos of girls taking their tops off, market them on late-night adult television, and then they will have the money for a Gamestation.
  • Transparent Closet: It's blatantly apparent that Greg and Terry are gay, but Stan won't notice until "Lincoln Lover."
