Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Convenient Miscarriage: Gloria suffers one after falling suddenly ill at the dinner table. When Archie learns what happened, he shows to viewers, for the first time in this series, his softer side.
  • Daddy's Girl: For as much as Archie detested Gloria's changed values – thanks to her meeting Mike and being in college and learning about the world – he never forgot that he was her father ... in that she would often depend on him to be there for her darkest hours and toughest times and needed a staunch defender. When Gloria weeps that she disappointed her father and now she won't be having a baby after all, Archie tells her he will always love her and stand by her, no matter what.
  • Emotionally Tongue-Tied: Archie when he's comforting Gloria over her miscarriage.
    Gloria: You wanna say something?
Archie: Well, no, no, nothin', I... no, nothin'.
Gloria: You love me. (Archie nods silently)
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: When Archie explodes into one of his by-now typical rants questioning how Mike, who is unemployed, intends to raise a child and Mike can't get a word in edgewise, a frustrated Mike and Gloria actually consider abortion, as the procedure had been legalized in New York state in 1970 (one year before this episode aired). It never comes to pass ... but tragically, there won't be a little Stivic baby, either.
  • Sentimental Music Cue: The only episode to have such a scene, with such music.
  • Tearjerker: The first such moment in the series, and the first time that Archie's tender side is seen. He is truly crushed when the sudden joy of being a grandfather has now been dashed, but now he's got to figure out how to find the words to try to console his Little Goil.
  • Vertebrate with Extra Limbs: Gloria, Edith, Mike, and Gloria's friend are all joking about mutated babies at the dinner table ... but the fun ends when Gloria falls violently ill.
