Recap / All Hail King Julien S 06 E 09 Karl Mageddon

Go To

Karl has announced his retirement to Florida, and so he has hidden 5 golden mangoes in the kingdom offering those who find them a chance to tour his evil lab and the opportunity to become King Julien's replacement arch-nemesis.

Tropes:

  • Balloon Belly: Mort is forced to drink an entire ocean and gets one of these.
  • Beehive Barrier: As it turns out, Karl’s base is enclosed by a beehive barrier force-field that happens to be electrified. Pancho and Andy Fairfax discover this the hard way when they try to escape.
  • Call-Back: Karl's ultimate plan is to use the Karl Star to blow up the kingdom. Julien claims he was able to piece together Karl's plan based on their past experiences and we are shown clips from just about every episode Karl has appeared in spliced together (albeit with new sentence fragments not from their source episodes) into one sentence revealing said plan.
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Parody
  • Comically Inept Healing: Julien's attempt to resuscitate Mort with brute force appears to revive and kill Mort a couple of times in a row.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Julien defeats Karl once and for all. Not through dumb luck, not through someone else doing it for him, but with his own thinking and well-foreshadowed planning.
  • Death Course: Karl's Karl-brynth.
  • End-of-Series Awareness: Karl is planning his retirement and sets out on his final scheme. This marks the beginning of the endgame for All Hail King Julien, as every episode from here on out will be in preparation for the finale.
  • Evil Old Folks: Mort's grandfather makes an appearance, having apparently been serving prison time the entire time, eager to take advantage of Karl's offer to shape Mort into a villain like him.
  • Flanderization: Karl has only ever been seen with his one minion Chauncey, but here he is seen with an entire army of cockroach minions, presumably for the sake of the Charlie and the Chocolate Parody.
  • Hall of Mirrors: One of the rooms in Karl's Karl-brynth is one of these.
  • Hired to Hunt Yourself: The reasoning for Julien to compete in Karl's Karl-con and win the prize of being Julien's next nemesis.
Julien: If I'm my own nemesis, then can't nobody take me down! I'm invincible, baby!
Maurice: I hate to say it, but that's not actually not a bad idea.
Clover: No enemies, no threats. Wow, can't believe this, but I think all three of us are on the same page!
  • Huge Holographic Head: Karl uses one several times throughout the episode.
  • Mirrors Reflect Everything: Realizing Karl has a fondness for lasers, Julien puts Maurice in charge of bringing a crowd to attend Karl-Con to cheer Julien on with poster board signs that are backed with mirrors so when the time comes, the crowd can reflect Karl's laser.
  • Running Gag: As he did before with Russia, Julien makes blatantly inaccurate assumptions on what Florida is like, this time asserting that it is humidity and mosquito free.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: The reason Grandpa Mort has it out for King Julien is because he was originally imprisoned by a King Julien (specifically called out as Julien's Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandfather) and has held a grudge against the royal family ever since.
Grandpa Mort: I lost everything because of him, because of your family!
Julien: I didn't even know that dude. I'm all about freedom, peace and tasty jams, man!
    Grandpa Mort: You're too late.
  • Stepford Smiler: As a commentator for Karl-Con, Xixi randomly asserts that her life is going great right now and immediately starts crying.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: When Mort refuses to join his grandfather in killing Julien, Grandpa Mort simply resorts to consuming Mort's essence, but it proves to be too strong for Grandpa Mort and causes him to explode, freeing Mort.
  • Trash the Set: Karl’s base is destroyed in the fallout of his defeat, cementing it’s finality.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Karl uncharacteristically loses it when Julien effortlessly counters his final plan and breaks down crying, ultimately surrendering to Julien and retiring for real.
  • X-Ray Sparks: Happens to both Pancho and Andy Fairfax when they crash into Karl's electrified Beehive Barrier.
