Recap / All Grown Up S 1 E 2 Susie Sings The Blues

Go To

Susie is approached by a talent agent called Beverly Jones, who thinks she can help her get a major record deal. Her parents don't approve, forcing Susie to go behind their backs.

Chuckie grows tired of his 'vanilla' reputation, and decides to pull a series of pranks in the hope of getting an extreme punishment from Pangborn.

Tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Chuckie ends the episode declaring he's going to do the most dangerous thing he's done yet (refuting Tommy's suggestion of robbing a bank) - he's going to walk up to a pretty girl and say hi.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The talent night at the Java Lava is set up early on, and Susie ends up performing there to reclaim her faith in singing.
  • Cool Big Sis: We see that Alisa has grown into this. She lends Susie $1000 she was planning to use to buy a house, in the hopes of getting her sister a record deal. And when the con is discovered, Alisa is more concerned with what could have happened to Susie, also saying that there's no pressure to pay her back at once.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Angelica's bad singing sounds merely like the actress is going off key deliberately, but it draws complaints from the neighbours and people begin to walk out of the coffee house while she's performing. Tellingly, later episodes would just highlight how she pales in comparison to Susie.
  • Hourglass Plot: In Rugrats, it was normally Tommy trying to convince Chuckie to go on wacky adventures. Now it's Chuckie roping Tommy into his scheme to live on the edge.
  • Informed Flaw: One problem in the episode is Beverly Jones and several other characters downplaying Susie's singing, with Lil in particular saying that she sounds nice in a school talent show but would pale in comparison to a star like Emica. The problem comes when the fact that Susie's voice actress Cree Summer is a professional singer as well, having been performing since she was thirteen. So when she sings, it should be obvious to anyone that Susie has a professional quality voice. Of course, this could be the point of the episode, since Susie's triumphant performance at the end has the entire Java Lava applauding.
  • Only Sane Man: Tommy plays this to Chuckie, despite going along with his schemes.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Pangborn is a former pro wrestler, with a hardass reputation. But then the episode reveals his soft spot for animals, and he writes poetry in his spare time.
  • Sickeningly Sweet: Pangborn's poem "Sugar Rainbows" has everyone cringing at how saccharine it is.
  • "Walk on the Wild Side" Episode: The B-plot is Chuckie's desire to cut loose.
