S1 - Ep 2: The "Not-So-Dull" Summer Camp - Pt 1

Luz takes the bus to Reality Check Summer Camp, with one of its employees checking who has and who don't has powers. She also makes a friend on the long ride there.

This chapter contains examples of:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Julia tells Luz her friends call her Julie and its okay for her to call her that.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Luz notes that Julia is very pretty and she just so happens to be a kind-hearted girl.
  • Buses Are for Freaks: Downplayed. The bus itself isn't bad, with the strange part are the passengers being teenagers with superpowers who are at least behaving well.
  • Fascinating Eyebrow: Luz raises an eyebrow when Julia giggles at her antics instead of being mad.
  • First Friend: Julia becomes this to Luz.
  • Green Thumb: Julia's power grants her controllable, thorny green vines grown from her hands.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Julia has pale blonde hair and is a Nice Girl.
  • The Insomniac: Downplayed for Luz. She notes it usually took her an hour at best to go to sleep after going to bed, mostly due to the fact that she never seemed to run out of energy.
  • Luminescent Blush: Luz has this when Julia asks her to be her friend.
  • No Social Skills: Luz more than a few times thinks out loud things that could be seen as inappropriate to someone you just met. She notes that most people get mad at her in the past for blurting stuff like that out. Luckily, Julia is not one of those people.
    • She also mentally notes it was rude for her to not introduce herself to someone before asking that "are you rich" question to her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Julia has a brief one when Luz reveals her Aura Vision lets her know she has a superpower.
  • Old Money: Julia mentions her family is this with her parents oil tycoons.
  • Papa Wolf: Julia tells her new friend that her father sent her to summer camp to protect her and help further with her education as school being out for the summer. Although Luz notices the look of conflict in her eyes.
  • Pom-Pom Girl: Luz mentions to Julia that she did try out for being a cheerleader at her school. It… didn't work out.
  • Prestige Peril: Julia mentions that being related to a rich oil tycoon leads to… well, perilous situations. With the Mass Super-Empowering Event, her father has been worried that perhaps some of the people who want them dead might have gotten some.
  • Spock Speak: Julia's formal way of talking makes Luz ask if she's from a rich family. Julia confirms this.
  • Super Registration Act: Downplayed. The camp staff members tells Luz she's legally supposed to ask before the kids enter the bus whether or not they have a superpower. Luz complies but was hoping she'd be barred.
  • Take That!: The story refers to CNN and Fox News as hacks.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: Luz notices that all the superhuman kids on the bus don't have any visible powers like gills, bug eyes, or any sort of mutations like she's heard on the news.
  • Twinkle in the Eye: Luz's eyes sparkle in awe at Julia's superpower.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Discussed. Luz wonders why the camp was even opening amongst chaos caused by the Mass Super-Empowering Event. She noted it'd make more sense if the government would want to take control of the situation.
  • Wham Line: Not to Luz, but to the readers who have seen The Owl House and are familiar with Julia's last name knows who's related to her.
Luz: Names Luz! Luz Noceda, nice to meet ya, uh…?
Julia: Oh, right! Julia, Julia Wittebane of the former English noble family of the Wittebanes.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Julia tells Luz that trying out new things is a good thing even if they don't work out.

Well… If I didn't go to this stupid camp, I wouldn't have met Julia… maybe this won't be so bad after all?
