S2 - Ep 4: Summer Break Shenanigans - Part 4

A brutal fight breaks out in the supermarket between Luz and Wittebane assassins. She gains a new Quirk and suffers a great betrayal from someone she trusted that dives her over the edge.

This chapter contains examples of:

  • Admiring the Abomination: Downplayed. As scared as she was of Luz's Healing Factor, Millie couldn't help but be fascinated by her seeming immortality.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Any time a local looked at Luz, it was either with fear or anger. Little children would run away from her in fear, adults would run indoors after a mere glance of her.
  • Almighty Mom: Luz still shudders at the thought of her mama being angry with her, despite how many powerful Quirks she has in her possession, especially if she causes expensive property damage.
  • An Arm and a Leg: One of Luz's arms get blown off by one of the gunmen. Luckily she grows it back.
  • And I Must Scream: When Luz has been reduced to Ludicrous Gibs, she's aware of what's going on in her surroundings while in excruciating pain.
There was pain. Her body felt like it was on fire. Everything burned, everything hurt.
  • Armor Is Useless: The first gunman's bulletproof vest doesn't save him from his comrades' hail of high-calibre bullets when used as a Human Shield by Luz the Anti-Hero.
  • Asshole Victim: The gunmen and Wittebane assassin that Luz kills are this.
  • Attack on the Heart: Narrowly averted as Luz gets shot.
  • Aura Vision: Luz can tell that the last gunman is a superhuman before he shows is power by the line connecting to his forehead via her Quirk.

  • The Bad Guys Are Cops: They certainly are to Luz.
  • Blinded by Rage: Luz at the end of the chapter is described as being this.
  • Blood from the Mouth: After being fatally injured by Luz, the second gunman vomits blood.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Riley is described to be about ready to have a case of this when Luz survives her Assassination Attempt.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue:
    • Luz's first response to the first gunman is to politely ask him what he wants with a Seen It All attitute until he fires warning shots scaring away thee other shoppers.
    • Since he's a voice inside Luz's head, Shigaraki sometimes engage in this with her while his host battles whoever she's up against. Although offer advice if he feels she needs it or shut up when she must concentrate.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Literally minutes after she steals the Quirk, Luz uses "Multiplier" to negate her own demise by using it together with her Healing Factor to do a Pulling Themselves Together move after being blown to bits by her cousin Riley.
  • Clothing Damage: After healing from her gunshot wounds, the evidence Luz was shot in the first place are the bullet holes in her tank-top.
  • Collateral Damage: The Independent supermarket gets badly damaged inside and out due to the fight between Luz and the assassins sent to kill her.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Luz takes this further than canon by being willing to use her foes as a Human Shield, use lethal force on them, or if they have a Quirk just use her Power Parasite ability to De-power them.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: When held at gunpoint at the supermarket, Luz offhandedly notes he's the third person this month to do that to her.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Luz snarks at the climax that the events of the chapter could've been avoided if Camila didn't send her to do her shopping.
  • Deadly Force Field: Luz takes out the Wittebane assassin with one of the exploding variety of these.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Shigaraki can be this.
  • Death Glare:
    • Luz recalls scaring off the last 2 people that raised a gun on her with just this.
    • Riley gives Luz this before she blows her up at the supermarket.
  • Determinator: Luz notes the superhuman assassin fought to the bitter end trying to kill her, never giving up.
  • Disease Bleach: At the end of the chapter, Luz's hair becomes half brown, half white.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Millie, who had witnessed Luz kill her comrade simply calls her brutal with a smile on her face.
  • Empty Shell: The assassin gets brain damaged from Luz stealing his Quirk giving him Empty Eyes. The All For One User decides to give him a Mercy Kill via Head Crushing.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Riley's betrayal is last straw for Luz.
  • Evil Smells Bad: The abomination sludge Millie the witch summons is noted by Luz to smell disgusting.
  • Fingore: The hitman is able to break Luz's Absurdly Sharp Claws when she tried to stab him. Its nothing her Super Regeneration can't fix up.
  • Exhaustion-Induced Idiocy: Luz considers her mother sending her to go shopping at the The Independent in the town that hates her to be a lapse of judgement due to being too tired from working late hours.
  • Facepalm of Doom: This how Luz kills the last gunman.
  • Fantastic Racism: The first gunman refers to Luz as a demonic freak.
  • Flying Broomstick: Millie meets Luz on of these.

  • He Knows Too Much: Along with being made a vegetable and trying to assassinate her, Luz chooses to kill the super assassin because he knows her All For One identity.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Luz notes that the Tyler Wittebane, with his great influence on the media, has made her even more of this by exaggerating her stories. She laments its become so bad she'd wish she and and her mom could just move states if weren't for The Promise she made.
She hated this. She really, really hated this.
  • Human Shield: Luz grabs the first gunman by the neck and uses him as a meat shield against his comrades' next salvo of lead. It protects her from the guns but the crook dies from his injuries.
  • The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: Luz quickly turns the tables on the gunmen and the Wittebane assassin by killing them all first.
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: Luz at one point gets shot in the throat. Fortunately, she can heal it off.
  • Inertia Is a Cruel Mistress: Shigaraki points out this is how the Wittebane contract killer was able to to send Luz flying, despite not having Super-Strength. He had a running start.
Shigaraki: “Simple: Mass times acceleration, Luz. The more mass, and the faster it travels, the more of an impact it will have. Did you ever pay attention in class, dear?
  • Internal Reveal: Millie reveals to the cops that have Luz at gun point that she's the vigilante All For One and her role in The Massacre of Fools.
  • Irony: Luz recently bought a pair of black airforce shoes of which is also a named the meme “Black Airforce Energy” used to describe the footage of her butchering those campers. The punchline being she has no idea what the phrase means
  • It Gets Easier: Luz is also a little unsettled that ever since the Death Camp its become not to difficult on her conscious for her to take a human life. She notes that any remorse she feels for taking this teen's life is nothing compared to causing "The Massacre Of Fools."
  • Killing in Self-Defense: Luz offering the assassins sent after her counts as this.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: With over half a dozen cops holding her at gunpoint and Millie revealing her Vigilante Man identity and her role in The Massacre of Fools, Luz decides to surrender peacefully before things escalate further... only for her older cousin Riley to touch her from behind her and activate her Bomb Quirk...
  • Laser Sight: Luz gets several of these on her from the police snipers.
  • Lazy Bum: Luz sees Riley as this for not getting the groceries forcing her to get them instead.
  • Light 'em Up: Millie the witch can fire a beam of light magic that can leave her target with a Torso with a View.

  • Ludicrous Gibs: Luz is reduced to this by her cousin Riley's Quirk when she betrays her... luckily she uses her Quirks in a Pulling Themselves Together move.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!":
    • The three gunmen have this expression on their faces when Luz's Healing Factor allows her to survive her gunshots wounds and regrow a new arm.
    • All of Luz's enemies have this reaction when she survives being blown to chunks, puts herself back together again and goes into Unstoppable Rage mode.
  • Mugging the Monster: The crooks the sheriff hired to attack Luz are definitely this.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: The Wittebane hitman's Quirk "Multiplier" allows him to grow multiple arms from his body. Being a power that Shigaraki had when he was alive, he eggs on Luz to take it before she kills the hitman.
  • Neck Lift: Luz does this to the first gunman after recovering from her gunshot wounds.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Luz was seconds away from peacefully surrendering to the police, where the chief was most likely planning on arresting her on trumped up charges to put her away for a long time, when Riley chooses to go in for the kill. Not only does this fail to murder her cousin but makes her decide to fuck self-control and go into a murderous blind rage.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Luz laments that she's not a heartless monster the media betrays her to be. If anything, she was a troubled teenager with mountains of trauma. Trauma that was caused by the States Governor.
  • Not Quite Dead: Everyone assumes Luz been put down for good after being blown up by Riley, she just simply pulls herself back together with her improved Healing Factor faster than the cops can shoot at her.
Luz should have died. By all rights, Luz’s life should have ended right then and there. But Shigaraki knew better. He had come back from worse before, and so he knew how this was going to go. Because… Luz. Didn’t. Die.
  • Off with Her Head!: When Luz was blown up by Riley, she could see her torso across the parking lot, all but confirming this.
  • Older Than They Look: Luz notes Millie looks like a 10-year old but since she's a member of the Emperor's Coven she's most likely at least a young adult around Riley's age.
  • Otaku: Who would have thought that a Card-Carrying Villain like All For One would be an avid manga reader nerd like Luz? This gives the two a brief Commonality Connection.
  • Overdrawn at the Blood Bank: The Wittebane assassin is complete caked in his own blood after being hit by Luz's Deadly Force Field.
  • Persona Non Grata: Luz laments that the supermarket is one of the few places that hasn't blacklisted her. Though, the security guards keep a close eye on her.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Despite being just under 5 ft. tall, Millie is still part of the emperor's elite witches can is able hold her own against Luz in their fight, doing serious damage to her. This trope also applies to Luz who is essentially a One-Man Army.
  • Pointy Ears: Luz notices Millie's are like that of an elf's, not knowing she's a Witch.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Not only does Tyler Wittebane hate superhumans, demons and witches, he has also made speeches against the lgbt community and non-white people having equal rights.
  • Power High: Luz admits she gets this when she steals a Quirk with All For One, which explains why she has a Psychotic Smirk and tends to go Ax-Crazy whenever she does it.
  • Prepare to Die: Millie says this to Luz before engaging in their fight.
  • The Promise: Luz notes this to the local pastor was the only reason why she doesn't plead to her mother to move out of state entirely.
  • Pulling Themselves Together: After being blown to pieces by her cousin Riley, Luz does this with a combination of her Super Regeneration and recently acquired Multi-Armed and Dangerous Quirk, much to the shock and horror of the enemies that witnessed the scene, as its described as a Lovecraftian Superpower.
  • Punched Across the Room: The hitman is able to do this to Luz twice, sending her crashing through several aisles until she hits the wall of the supermarket.
  • Rage Breaking Point: At the climax of the chapter Luz is done. The Fantastic Racism. Her Hero with Bad Publicity status. The Assassination Attempts. Just done. With everything...
Luz could barely see anything. That was how furious she had been. That was how angry she had been. And thus… She gave in to her hate.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Subverted. Black and red lightning sparks from Luz's hands when she steals a Quirk and wears these coloured clothes but she's still a good person.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Millie has ruby-red eyes and is a member of the Emperor's elite members. Luz also gets this when she steals a Quirk or gets angry enough.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Whenever Luz gets severely injured a fight and activates her "Super Regeneration" Quirk, she also activates her "Pain Nullification" Quirk, as well. This is so that she doesn't succumb to the crippling pain as her body heals and she can keep on fighting.
  • Right-Wing Militia Fanatic: Luz thinks the first shooter is one of these due to looking like a stereotypical truck nut.
  • The Scream: The teen assassin let's one out as luz steals his Quirk.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Nearly every shopper other Luz runs out of the supermarket when the first gunman starts shooting at her. The rest try to hide from the fight.
  • Seen It All: Shigaraki, aware of the scene unfolding, isn't at all worried Luz was blown to pieces or surprised that his successor would live. After all he's survived worse.
  • Shout-Out: Luz tells Shigaraki she's still reading One Piece, the latter let's her know its called Two Piece back in his world.
  • Slasher Smile: The Dirty Cop Police Chief has a shit-eating grin over Luz's presumed corpse.
  • Soul-Sucking Retail Job: Luz believes the shop assistants weren’t paid enough to care about her being a pariah due to this.
  • Spirit Advisor: All For One acts as this to Luz during her fight with the third gunman, requesting her to steal his Quirk, as it was useful to him when he was alive.
  • Standard Bleeding Spots: Luz gains a small line of blood streaming down her left temple after being Punched Across the Room.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Shigaraki requests Luz to steal the "Multiplier" Quirk, the teen let's him know she already going to do that.
  • Struggling Single Mother: The plot of this chapter kicks off because Luz was sent to the store to pick up groceries because her mother was tired from working a night shift.
  • Summon Magic: Millie can use Abomination magic in the form of a tidal wave to knock Luz out of the supermarket outside, which Luz is able to block with her Deflector Shields.
  • Super Registration Act: There's a new law that states you're no longer allowed to go outside unless had some sort of verified license that told everyone what their power was.
  • Super-Strength: Luz kills the second gunman by smacking him so hard with her arm that she caves in his chest.
  • Tank-Top Tomboy: Luz has black ones as pyjamas.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Riley has a brief moment of this when she believes has murdered Luz.
  • This Cannot Be!: The sheriff has this reaction when Luz starts Pulling Themselves Together.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Originally, Luz could only safely hold 10 Quirks at a time before it started damaging her body. In this chapter, All For One informs her that she can now hold up to 15 after training her body up.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: While the news has exaggerated this trope regarding her, Luz acknowledges that the Death Camp experience gave her a mean streak. She certainly doesn't feel strongly about Thou Shall Not Kill.
  • Torso with a View: Luz receives one of these from Millie the Witch's magic laser beam. Fortunately, it's nothing her Healing Factor can't fix, albeit with some scarring on her stomach.
  • Tranquil Fury: Luz becomes this when she remarks that she can't even do a simple shopping trip without being harassed by people trying to kill her.
Luz: (Through barely Suppressed Rage) You know… I just wanted to get some shopping done. Really, that’s it! (Red Eyes, Take Warning) But, it would seem as if I’m not even allowed that.
  • Twitchy Eye: Luz gets one of these with a You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me! attitude when someone tries to pull a gun on her.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The crooks that the police chief hired were being used to draw out All For One.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Tyler Wittebane leads a conservative mega-church that's popular enough to indoctrinate people in his Fantastic Racism "crusade" against superpowers and minorities, and has many supporters. This makes it more difficult for Luz to bring him down by legal means.
  • Why Won't You Die?: The Quirk user hitman says to Luz she just doesn't know how to die.
Wittebane Hitman: You just don’t know when to die, do you?
  • Worthy Opponent: Luz considers the superhuman hitman to be this at the end of their fight, for giving her so much trouble, even equating their battle to something out of a manga, despite not learning his name.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Before the first gunman can fire at Luz again, the Quirk users plucks it out of his hands with her Wolverine Claws and crushes it with her Super-Strength.
  • You Monster!: A lot of people in Gravesfield has this opinion on Luz the mass killer.
