Jordan throws a birthday party for Layla, who has turned 18 years old, against the wishes of both Layla and Olivia. Olivia invites a reluctant Spencer to come, hoping that he can resolve issues with Billy. Meanwhile, Coach Montes offers Asher to meet a doctor who can help him recover from his cardiomyopathy.


Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Amicable Exes: While things are a little awkward between them, Spencer and Layla have managed to hold a friendly talk with each other. That said, she declines his offer to escort her away from the party.
  • Birthday Episode: Takes place during Layla's 18th birthday.
  • Birthday Hater: Layla is clearly not happy having to go through a birthday party she considers frivolous and childish, and would rather have a nice little dinner. At the end, she admits that she has hated birthdays ever since her father stopped paying attention to her.
  • Broken Pedestal: Olivia theorizes that Billy is still vindictive against Spencer because he always expected him to be perfect, so him doing mistakes shattered that view.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Coop's lungs were permanently damaged by the shooting, and the doctors told her she may never be able to rap again.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Billy is still mad at Spencer, which makes it awkward since he is dating his daughter. Olivia tries to get them reconcile at the birthday party, but they haven't yet reached an understanding at the end.
  • Hope Spot: Coach Montes promises Asher that the doctor she recommends will be able to heal him. We later learn that all he did was tell tell him that his condition was caused by him taking steroids to improve his performance.
  • Lonely Together: Asher and Coop befriend over shattered dreams caused by their health problems.
  • Silent Treatment: Billy does not show his anger at Spencer directly, instead resorting to ignore him whenever he can.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Both Jordan and Olivia call Billy out for treating Spencer like dirt for something he wasn't even responsible for.
