Recap / Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S6 E12 "The Sign"

Go To

As Izel prepares to open the gateway and bring forth her kind, S.H.I.E.L.D. prepares to stop her.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: As part of Deke's rant against how S.H.I.E.L.D. does not fully appreciate him, he mentions how his girlfriend is a sociopath. When Simmons starts to mention Snowflake, Deke cuts her off by saying he was talking about Sequoia.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Deke teleports into the Temple of the Forgotten to save Mack, Yo-Yo, and Flint from Izel after reaching his Rage Breaking Point with nobody taking him seriously enough to realize that he can actually be useful.
  • Brick Joke: Back in "Fun and Games", Flint had no idea what a taco was when Yo-Yo brought them up, much to everyone's shock. After he's taken to Zephyr One, Flint asks if Earth still has tacos.
  • Call-Back: After using his jump drive to teleport to the temple, Deke gives his anti-possession tech bracelet to Flint, having only brought two for Mack and Yo-Yo. When Flint worries about Deke, he mentions that he has problems with wearable tech anyway as a result of his upbringing in the Bad Future last season, which he first mentioned earlier this season.
  • Continuity Nod: Flint asks if Izel is the Destroyer of Worlds, the identity of whom was the Driving Question of Season Five.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Deke uses the portable jump drive to teleport to the temple, but finds himself stranded because the drive needs about 20 minutes to recharge if he wants to jump more than a few meters away.
Deke: Well, I wish you had told me that!
    Fitz: YOU JUMPED AWAY!!
    Deke: [to himself] Wearable tech!
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn:
    • Pachakutiq finally manifests fully as Sarge throws his lot in with Izel, skewering May with his sword.
    • Enoch's anthropologist friend Isaiah has been reassigned as a Hunter and turns on him.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Deconstructed. Deke is aware that nobody on Team Coulson likes him and is resentful of it, even a little sad in the case of Leo and Jemma.
  • Hope Spot: It looks like May is finally reaching out to Sarge. But then, he suddenly runs her through with his sword.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Sarge runs May through with his sword when he gives in fully to Pachakutiq.
  • Internal Reveal: The copy of Flint created by the Monoliths learns that Team Coulson was able to prevent the Bad Future last season, that Yo-Yo lost her arms, and that Deke was sent back to the present.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Mack angrily chews Daisy out for bringing Sarge on the mission to stop Izel. He turns out to be right that it was a terrible idea.
  • Kick the Dog: Izel breaks one of Flint's legs to spite him for freeing Mack and Yo-Yo. To twist the knife, she possesses Yo-Yo to do it, then taunts her about it.
  • Love Epiphany: May helps Sarge come to the realization that the deep-seated pain he feels is love, which he accepts. Unfortunately, he decides to get rid of the pain and the remnant of Coulson by cutting that love out of himself, stabbing May.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Flint uses his Inhuman powers to threaten Izel, thus cluing her in to the fact that his powers are exactly what she needs for her Evil Plan.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Izel gets quite a few, first when she fails to possess Yo-Yo, then when she realises that Sarge has a sword that can actually kill her, and one more when Sarge admits to feeling love while looking at May (though these last two ultimately work out in her favor).
    • Enoch meets up with Isaiah, after previously contacting him to enact some plan with the remaining Chronicom anthropologists. Isaiah reveals that all the anthropologists were reassigned to Hunter roles. He proceeds to attack Enoch once the tablet shows his own reassignment notice.
  • Only Sane Woman: When Mack and Daisy get into an argument over Daisy's decision to bring Sarge to the temple vs. Mack's decision to have (a possibly artificial) Flint evacuated, Elena asks if this is really the time to have this discussion... because the Shrike hosts are right outside.
  • Shout-Out: Izel's Shrike infest hundreds of locals, with the intent to have an army ready for when her people cross over. The hosts behave and act like typical zombies, which begins a plethora of nods from the team: Daisy makes a reference to "fast ones", while Mack references George A. Romero.
  • Tempting Fate: After she, May, and Sarge kill some Shrike hosts, Daisy muses that there can't be too many more because she wiped out the swarm that spawned from the tower. Without missing a beat, she immediately lampshades her error just as many more signals appear on Sarge's tablet.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Deke's desperate desire for approval from FitzSimmons is in full force here.
  • Wham Shot: Sarge stabbing May and shoving her through the portal to his and Izel's dimension.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Deke is upset that Simmons had kept future Fitz's death from him for awhile. She wanted to spare him from the pain, but he said they could have shared the pain together.
