Recap / Agent Carter S1E3 "Time and Tide"

Go To

Peggy and Jarvis close in on Stark's stolen weapons but the SSR begins closing in on them.

Tropes:

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: In-universe, though most people couldn't stand Krzeminski, the whole office is in mourning the day after his death.
  • Asshole Victim: Deconstructed with Agent Krzeminski, with neither "asshole" nor the "victim" part downplayed. Even though he was a jerk to most of his coworkers, was cheating on his wife and was overall a jerkass and slob, the whole SSR staff is despondent the day after his death, having seen how sudden death can be. Even Peggy is confused as to why she's so affected by his murder. On one hand, Krzeminski never had anything kind to say to her. On the other hand, she's feels it's her fault that she got him killed, by ordering an anonymous tip in the middle of the night.
  • Berserk Button: The normally unflappable Jarvis flaps a bit when Thompson brings his wife into his threats during interrogation. His rage is barely contained.
  • Blackmail: Thompson threatens to get Jarvis and his wife deported if he doesn't give up Stark. This despite the fact that the SSR still doesn't have any proof that Stark wasn't robbed and Jarvis technically hadn't been charged with anything.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Krzeminski does a very brief, comically fake Italian accent upon discovering Brannis's forged Italian passport.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: After Ray's death, Peggy asks Angie to join her in doing so.
  • Enter Stage Window: Jimmy climbs into Mary Bowden's window.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Peggy's landlady takes the "no men above the first floor" rule very seriously. She evicts a tenant on the spot for breaking it.
  • Fragile Speedster: In a brawl with Zandow on The Heartbreak, Peggy gets literally thrown. As scrappy as Peggy can be in a fight, there was still a very large raw strength mismatch between the two combatants.
  • Gone Horribly Right: One of Stark's missing inventions is a massage device so powerful that it can make the user's muscles contract so much that they shatter their own bones.
  • Hidden Depths: In public, Stark is a playboy and careless inventor, The Casanova and Mad Scientist. He never makes public things like saving a man from charges of treason for attempting to rescue a Jewish woman from the Nazis, or saving that woman himself.
  • His Name Is...: Krzeminski and Jerome Zandow (Brannis's goon guarding the boat) get gunned down just as the goon starts about talking about a British woman (Peggy) being on The Heartbreak.
  • It's Personal: After Krzeminski's death, Dooley is even more determined to nail Stark, even though he didn't pull the trigger.
  • Killed to Uphold the Masquerade: Krzeminski gets shot just when he may have begun to suspect Peggy of being a double agent.
  • Mood Whiplash: When the entire SSR office is saddened by the murder of Krzeminski, and Dooley sadly tells them he'll phone his wife to tell her the news of his death, Thompson sadly says that he'll call his girlfriend.
  • The Noun and the Noun: The episode's title is "Time and Tide".
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: In a quite hard to watch variation, Peggy has to pretend to blow the case against Jarvis by being the useless secretary most of her co-workers think she is.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Dooley says in front of the whole office that whoever actually killed Krzeminski, it's Howard Stark's fault in the end. Meaning it's Peggy's fault as well...
  • Oh, Crap!: Angie recognizes the landlady bringing up Houdini over breakfast as a sign that someone's about to go.
Angie: Ugh! Houdini! That's never good.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: In-Universe. Jarvis fakes an American accent when calling the SSR office. It's... less than convincing.
  • Properly Paranoid: Everyone with regard to Stark's technology.
Souza: Cut it out with that, would ya? I don't wanna be inside out.

Dooley: Hey, boys, drive carefully, I don't wanna be the guy who sunk Manhattan.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Zandow's comment on seeing Peggy, that Brannis told him "one of you" would be showing up, becomes much more significant in retrospect. Note that this is the first episode where Dottie appears.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Dooley tears Peggy a new one after she intentionally botches Thompson's interrogation of Jarvis, telling her in no uncertain terms it's why she's never allowed on missions outside of the office.
  • Undying Loyalty: Stark earned this from Jarvis by saving him from charges of treason and helping to smuggle his Jewish wife out of Nazi occupied Europe.
