Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 58 The Robots Robot

Go To

The fifty-eighth episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Scratch and Grounder build their own robot, a naive over-grown kid called "Robot". When Robot runs off with the Butual Lepton Atomic Material Modification Oscillator (BLAMMO) device for Robotnik's new invention, the Super Planetary Implosion Machine (SPIM), capable of impoding huge parts of Mobius out of existence, the race is on to catch him, over all kinds of Sega terrain; mountains, caves, lava pools, rivers, oceans, snow and ice. Robot's homing device leads him back to the Fortress, but before Robotnik can press the button on the SPIM, Sonic and Tails rewire it to make the Fortress implode.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Robotnik's treatment of Scratch and Grounder has rubbed off on them, as they treat Robot similarly, making him do chores and calling him "slave". Downplayed later in the episode, however, as they do indeed love him deep down.
  • Berserk Button: Breaking his dishes is one for Robotnik, as Scratch and Grounder find out when they make Robot wash the dishes.
Scratch: Ohhh! Dr. Robotnik's gonna be VERY unhappy!
Robotnik: (walks in the kitchen doorway) Robotnik isn't unhappy. In fact, he's... EXTREMELY TICKED OFF! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY CHINA?!
Grounder: Uh... well, um... (in earnest) completely trashed it?
  • Bindle Stick: Robot runs away from Robotnik's fortress carrying one, which has the BLAMMO inside it.
  • Bowdlerize: The Toon Disney broadcast of this episode cuts out a scene at the beginning where Jackson and Susie do some stunts on their bicycles.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: This exchange from Scratch and Grounder when Robot returns to Robotnik's fortress:
Grounder: Dr. Robotnik, please don't implode our slave!
    Scratch: Snookums!
Grounder: Yeah, don't implode our slave, Snookums!
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: After Robot runs away from Robotnik's fortress, Scratch and Grounder post an article in the newspaper, claiming he left carrying a toothbrush, two pairs of extra underwear, and a highly unstable BLAMMO device that could easily implode the entire planet.
  • Call-Back: At the end of the episode, when Sonic needs to find a new home for Robot, Tails brings up Scrap Valley, which is where Robotnik's misfit robots from "Sonic Gets Thrashed" live.
  • Circling Birdies: After falling off the cliff at Jumbo Canyon, Scratch has stars spinning around his head, while Grounder has miniature versions of him spinning around his head..
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Scratch and Grounder name their robot "Robot".
  • "Eureka!" Moment: After Grounder nearly breaks the BLAMMO, Robotnik says, "A complete idiot could make a better robot than you!". This gives Scratch and Grounder the idea to make their own robot to do their work for them.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Although Scratch and Grounder initially plan to abuse him, it becomes gradually clearer throughout the episode that they indeed care for him despite Robotnik’s attitude rubbing off on them. This gets the point where when Robotnik threatens to implode him, they step in to protect him, even if it means getting imploded themselves at his hands.
  • Evil Takes a Nap: After Robotnik scolds Scratch, Grounder, and Robot for breaking his dishes, he says that he's going to proceed with his evil plan first thing in the morning after he gets a good night's sleep.
  • Friendly Enemy: In this episode's "Sonic Says" segment about fire safety, Robotnik's fortress catches fire when Grounder accidentally leaves the iron on. Sonic tries to get Scratch and Grounder out of the fortress safely by telling them to stay on the floor and not breathe in the smoke. He also warns them not to open the front door because it's hot, and is horrified when he finds out there's no fire escape in the window.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The Super Planetary Implosion Machine, and the Butual Lepton Atomic Material Moficiation Oscillator.
  • Kick the Dog: Robotnik's reaction to meeting Robot? Essentially belittle and threaten to disassemble him. This bites him hard later when Robot, in his haste to flee the fortress, takes the BLAMMO with him.
  • Losing Your Head: Grounder's head falls off his body after Robotnik yells at him.
  • Mythology Gag: While in the Frozen Lake, Robotnik summons the Burrobot enemies from Sonic 1 to attack Sonic, who appear radically different from their game counterparts.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Two lion cubs named Jackson and Susie live in the village that was imploded. Susie wears a pink jumpsuit, while Jackson wears a blue one.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: At the end of the episode, Robot decides he doesn't want to stay with Scratch and Grounder, given their impression of wanting to mistreat him. To say nothing of how Robotnik wished to treat him.
  • The Unintelligible: Robot communicates through a series of beeps rather than human speech.
  • Water-Geyser Volley: When Robot falls off a cliff at Jumbo Canyon, Sonic creates a geyser that launches Robot back up to the cliff.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: When Robotnik threatens to implode Robot, Scratch and Grounder stand in the way and refuse to move. An infuriated Robotnik decides to implode all three of them - thankfully, Sonic sabotaging the SPIM prevents this from happening.
