Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 31 Mac Hopper

Go To

The thirty-first episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Robotnik captures MacHopper, ace Freedom Fighter kangaroo, and uses his brain-wipe-reprogramming-computer to try and hypnotize him into capturing Sonic and Tails. When the process goes awry and leaves MacHopper without his memory, it's a race between Sonic and the Badniks to restore his mind - for good or evil.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: This line from Scratch after he and Grounder are wrapped up in linked sausages:
Scratch: Hog-tied by hotlinks? How humiliating!
  • Animal Gender-Bender: MacHopper is a male kangaroo, but he has a pouch.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When Sonic makes a last request, Robotnik mockingly copies his "I'm waiting!" catchphrase to taunt him.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Robotnik tries to brainwash MacHopper into capturing Sonic and Tails with his brain-wipe-reprogramming computer. A lightning strike, however, fouls the process and leaves MacHopper an amnesiac ditz.
  • Brick Joke: MacHopper uses the last of Sonic and Tails' chili as rocket fuel to launch Scratch and Grounder in the air so that he can get all the credit for capturing Sonic. Near the end of the episode, the magnetic force field that MacHopper builds to restore his mind pulls Scratch and Grounder's rocket in, causing it to destroy Robotnik's fortress.
  • The Cameo: Humpty from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine can be seen in the junkyard during Scratch and Grounder's phone conversation with Robotnik.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: The magnetic force field that MacHopper builds pulls the buckle to Robotnik's belt, causing his pants to fall and exposing pink boxers with white polka dots.
  • Comically Missing the Point: This exchange between Robotnik and MacHopper near the end of the episode, when the magnetic force field restores MacHopper's mind:
    Robotnik: What's happening to you?
MacHopper: I'm cleaning out all your evil programming, Dr. Bigbuttnik! As of now, I'm free!
Robotnik: Of course you're free! I never pay any of my minions.
  • The Door Slams You: Happens to MacHopper when Scratch and Grounder enter the Dogoteria.
  • Easy Amnesia: Robotnik tries to brainwash MacHopper into a loyal servant, but the process was interrupted by a lightning strike. This causes MacHopper to become spacey and forgetful, unable to remember even his own name.
  • Expy: MacHopper is one of the "Crocodile" Dundee.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Due to the imperfect brainwashing, MacHopper becomes fiercely loyal to Robotnik when he sees a picture of him, but can be temporarily restored to his old self by force-feeding him chilli. He eventually tricks Robotnik into removing the brainwashing via a magnetic force field.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: Robotnik suffers one as the result of posting three wanted posters in thirteen seconds.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: This exchange between Sonic and a hypnotized MacHopper:
Sonic: MacHopper, are you okay? Don't you recognize us? It's me, Sonic!
MacHopper: Hey, I never forget a face! Now who'd you say you are?
  • Improvised Lockpick: Early in this episode, MacHopper uses one of Scratch's tail feathers to pick the lock on his handcuffs.
  • Improvised Parachute: Tails grabs a sheet off a clothesline, which Sonic ties to the raft that he and MacHopper are on to use as a parachute.
  • Kitchen Sink Included: While looking for something to save himself, Sonic, and Tails as they fall down a waterfall, one of the things MacHopper pulls out of his pouch is a kitchen sink.
  • Last Request: Before Robotnik sends Sonic down the ocean as an icicle, Sonic tricks him into giving him a final request; one last chili dog for him and Tails. He gives them to MacHopper to keep him under control long enough to build a magnetic force field that undoes Robotnik's mind-control.
  • Sausage String Silliness: A hypnotized MacHopper wraps Sonic up in linked sausages. Tails manages to untie Sonic, tying up Scratch and Grounder in the process.
  • Tree Buchet: MacHopper uses one to launch him, Sonic, and Tails to the Dogoteria.
  • Visual Pun: Sonic stops on a dime... literally. Tails points it out, claiming he needs the change.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The spiciness of the chili overrides Robotnik's mind control over MacHopper. However, the effects of the chili are only temporary, and he slips back into his amnesiac self after a short while.
