- Chekhov's Gag: Early on, Bubblegum mentions that she's dealing with a group of suicidally lonely mermaids. At the end, Xergiok tries to drown himself in a lake after his brief return to evil drives his only friends away. Jake callously says he'll be fine. Cue Xergiok riding a mermaid out of the water, triumphantly shouting "I found a girlfriend!"
- Chronic Villainy: Almost as soon as his eyes are back in, Xergiok returns to his old megalomaniacal spanking-obsessed ways.
- Defeat Equals Friendship: Xergiok reformed after being defeated by Finn and Jake.
