Fionna and Cake are chasing Doctor Prince, who has stolen the Enchiridion, but the events degenerate into increasing absurdity, until Ice King comes out of the Enchiridion and easily defeats Doctor Prince. Fionna and Cake fawn over him and make him their best friend. We cut to reveal that Ice King is telling the story to four caged princesses, who are very unimpressed.

An invisible force pranks Ice King and releases the princesses, before revealing itself to be Marceline. She starts telling her own Fionna and Cake story.

Prince Gumball turns up at the Tree Fort with a tray of cream puffs for Fionna and Cake, but Marshall Lee appears, mocks him, and takes Fionna and Cake off to a wild party in the woods thrown by Lumpy Space Prince. Marshall and Fionna start singing a duet about the attraction of his evil for Fionna's goodness, which turns into a play fight. When things start getting too rough for Cake, she intervenes, and Marshall throws her hard against a tree, outraging Fionna.

Marshall kidnaps Cake and drags her to a graveyard, where he raises an army of skeletons to fight Fionna while rapping about how evil he is. Fionna pulls Cake away from Marshall and he falls onto a wooden stake, and is apparently mortally wounded. He tries to get Fionna to admit that she loves him, but she is angry that he's flirting at such a serious moment. Marshall is impressed with how "real" she is, and admits that he's pretending. Fionna punches him.

Ice King is angry that the princesses preferred Marceline's story and throws everyone out of his castle. We see him descend to a deep dungeon, where he kneels in prayer before huge statues of Fionna and Cake and vows to somehow find them in reality.

Tropes

  • Adaptational Jerkass: In-Universe, Marshal Lee is a lot more like pre-Character Development Marceline.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In-Universe, Doctor Prince is a villain in Ice King's story.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: In the Ice King's story, Fionna and Cake ride a giant Gunther that can fire lasers.
  • Author Avatar: Marshall is this to Marceline, but is nastier than her normal self.
  • Bowdlerise: Some versions of this cut Fionna's and Marshall's singing duet, and Cake's song, due to their respective references to Fionna "spending the night" with Marshall, and Cake doing something "on the table, for as long as I am able".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Marshall Lee raising a skeleton army for a musical number is what Marceline did for the Duke of Nuts' party in "Henchman".
    • Marshall fakes his death similarly to the way that Marceline faked hers for much more kindly reasons in "Henchman".
  • Deer in the Headlights: Wildberry Princess's utter, frozen, horror and disgust when Ice King suggests she might be attracted to him.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Marshall tries to get one out of Fiona while he's dying. She is incensed at this.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Fionna will tolerate some physical roughness as flirtatious horseplay, but DO. NOT. HURT. CAKE.
  • Eyebrow Waggle: Both the Ice King and Marceline do this at various points. The Ice King's is meant to have a lecherous tone, but it looks more funny than anything. Marceline's is purely for humor as she's poking fun at the Ice King.
  • Faking the Dead: Marshall does this to get a rise out of Fionna.
  • Five-Finger Fillet: At the party, Male!Tree Trunks (named Tail Tufts) is seen doing this wimpily with a spoon.
  • Girls with Moustaches: One of the barbarian Marauders has a female counterpart with a mustache.
  • Her Code Name Was "Mary Sue": Ice King's story ends with him physically appearing in the story and impressing Fionna and Cake with how wonderful he is. Marceline's depiction of Marshall Lee is a more restrained case.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: Fionna appears to have this attitude regarding Marshall Lee.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: When Marshall Lee takes Cake the Cat hostage. Luckily, Fiona rescues her before anything could happen.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Cake's humanoid shape when dancing with Marshall and singing is somewhat voluptuous, and what we hear of her lyrics in the pauses in Fionna's and Marshall's conversation are traditional R&B food-sex innuendos.
  • Necromancer: Marshall displays an ability to raise the dead for a musical number.
  • Random Events Plot: Ice King's story is just a series of random bizarre images.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning/Black Eyes of Crazy: Marshall can show black eyes with red pupils at certain points.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Gumball and Marshall have a similar antagonistic relationship to the one that Bubblegum and Marceline share.
  • Revenge Fic: In-universe. Marceline's version of Prince Gumball is particularly unintelligent, boring, and goody-goody, revealing a bit of her attitude regarding Princess Bubblegum. Marceline even has Fionna's opinion of Gumball be less than stellar and has her think more highly of Marshall Lee.
  • Shaking the Rump: Cake shakes her booty while she sings her verse of the song.
  • Shamu Fu: In Ice King's story, the evil Doctor Prince throws a live dolphin at Fionna and Cake.
  • Shapeshifter Showdown: The wrestling match between Cake and Marshall while Fionna is fighting the skeletons.
  • Spear Counterpart: Dr. Prince to Dr. Princess and Marshall to Marceline.
  • Troll: Marshall fighting Fionna, bullying Cake, and faking his death to mess with Fionna's head.
  • Tsundere: Fionna: not admitting her affections, but is still aggressive towards Marshall.
  • Villain Song: Marshall rapping "Bad Little Boy" while he holds Cake captive, Fiona fights off the skeletons risen from their graves, a skeleton beatboxes in the background.
Marshall Lee: (rapping) Did you think I was lying? I said I'm evil without even trying. Already dead, so I'm not scared of dying. Drinking the red from your heart in one sitting. You think you got me pegged? You must be kidding! I raise the dead up and they do my bidding. Girl, I'm a thousand years old; I'm a riddle. Bad little boy. Yes, I'm bad but not little.
  • Villain Sue: In-Universe. Marshall Lee is much more genuinely nasty and unempathetic than Marceline is, creating the impression that the story's her fantasy of how cool it would be if she were as evil as she pretends. Or, conversely, that she thinks more harshly of herself than objective reality portrays her.
  • We Will Meet Again: The dolphin says "next time" in a sinister voice as Fionna and Cake dodge it.
  • William Telling: Fionna does this with BMO and a throwing axe at the beginning of Marceline's story.
