Finn and Jake are hanging out with Flame Princess when she asks them to retrieve her scented candles from the Fire Kingdom. Fortunately, Flambo is nearby and casts his fire-proofing spell on them. They infiltrate the Fire Kingdom and quickly find the candles, but overhear two Shakespearian villains plotting to murder the Flame King.

They follow the conspirators through the Kingdom's air vents, but are unable to identify them. Finally, they infiltrate a company of actors who are performing for the court, and instead of the scripted scene, repeat the plotters' conversation in the hope of making them react suspiciously. The Flame King accuses them of treason and orders them to be executed immediately, but they recognise the two executioners as the plotters. The two turn out to be the Flame King's nephew and niece, whose father, his brother, he murdered for the throne. Finn asks the Flame King if everyone in the Fire Kingdom is evil, which the King confirms. However, the King also confirms that it would be possible for Flame Princess to become good.

Finn and Jake return to Flame Princess's house and find her asleep, so they light one of the candles from her flame hair, and leave it burning next to her. After they've gone, the Flame King manifests in the candle flame and starts muttering "evilevilevilevil", but Flame Princess wakes up in shock and he vanishes.

Tropes

  • Air-Vent Passageway: Finn and Jake sneak through the vents in the Flame King's palace, and use the opportunity to spy on various members of the court.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Discussed by Finn when determining the moral alignments of the Fire Kingdom.
  • As You Know:
Finn (in disguise): What’s going on with the costumes?
Fire Actor: This is a theatre troupe! We’re getting ready to perform for the king! Everyone in the kingdom will be in attendance! Of course, you know all this being fellow actors in the exact same troupe.
  • Bedlah Babe: Flame Princess's costume in this one has something of an Arabian harem girl theme.
  • Bedtime Brainwashing: After Finn and Jake retrieve Flame Princess's scented candles from the Fire Kingdom, they put them in her room while she's sleeping and light one with her flame hair. Her father, Flame King, possesses the flames and starts muttering "evil" into her ear, to try to frustrate Finn's hopes of making her good. But Flame Princess wakes up in shock and he vanishes.
  • Character Alignment: Invoked; Flame King acknowledges that everyone in the Flame Kingdom is evil aligned and says that Flame Princess would suffer "penalties to her experience if she acted out of alignment".
Finn: Wait, so is she Evil, or just, like, Chaotic Neutral?
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Finn instantly decides that he has to do something when he hears the conspirators planning to kill Flame King, even though he knows Flame King is evil.
  • The Corrupter: Flame King whispering "evil" in Flame Princess's ears to make sure she stays evil.
  • Evil Chef: The Jalapeno Pepper who Finn mistakes for one of the plotters and who tries to chop him and Jake up.
  • Farts on Fire: The episode opens with Finn and Jake farting and belching into carrier bags and sealing them like balloons, so that Flame Princess can make them explode with her fire powers.
  • Homage: The murder plot is a huge homage to Hamlet. The conspirators are plotting to pour ice in Flame King's ear because he murdered their father, his brother. Finn and Jake try to flush them out by performing the discussion they overheard as a play. One of the actors is heard quoting from the "To be or not to be" soliloquy as Finn and Jake sneak up on them. Jake does a bit of Leaning on the Fourth Wall when he claims that his plan is original.
  • Hulking Out: Flame Princess shifts into her enraged monstrous form at the mere thought of her father.
  • Ill-Timed Sneeze: Finn nearly sneezes while he and Jake are posing as a painting.
  • Mugged for Disguise: Two of the Fire actors suffer this at Finn and Jake's hands.
  • Off with His Head!: Threatened on Finn and Jake by the Flame King in those actual words.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: The Flame Guards who appreciate art and like snack breaks.
  • Save the Villain: Finn and Jake prevents the assasination of The Flame King, even though they know he's evil.
  • Sex–Face Turn: Finn openly questions the Flame King on the possibility of Flame Princess turning good if "a good guy really liked her".
  • Shout-Out:
    • Flame Princess's gestures as she blows up the second balloon are very close to Azula's when she snipes fire or lightning in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
    • Jake says "Suffering Succotash" when Finn knocks the hissing snake onto his head.
  • Sssnake Talk: Furnius has this kind of voice, and even has a forked tongue that sticks out when he speaks.
    • Lampshaded when a Fire Pepper cook states that he doesn't have that kind of voice, but rather a snake is on Finn.
