Finn and Jake must go into the memories of Marceline, who is trapped in a sleep spell, and find her "memory core" or else Marceline will stay asleep forever.

Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: At the end of the episode, Finn, Jake and Marceline all gang up on Ash and beat him senseless, but it's safe to say that he deserved it.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Finn is so shocked about being tricked by Ash he lets out several big "Whaaat?"s in a row.
  • Bowdlerise: UK airings cut out Jake stomping on Ash, possibly because he isn't shown surviving it.
  • Canis Latinicus: Ash's magic seems to run on this principle.
Ash: Ashicus flyicus. (Ash flies away)
  • Continuity Nod: In the title card, Mrs. Cow from "Storytelling" can be seen (without her bag). Meanwhile, in the episode proper, Finn whispers "Don't eat those [fries]" to the memory of Marceline's father.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Once Marceline kicks Ash in the nuts, he just lies there as Marceline, Finn, and Jake just keep on kicking and stomping on him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: This episodes reveals tidbits of Marceline's tragic backstory as a survivor of the mushroom war, then a beloved teddy bear she owned was sold by her abusive boyfriend, but in later episodes, it gets MUCH more tragic.
  • Embarrassing Old Photo: A variant; when Marceline is pulled into Finn's memories, she sees a memory of Finn as a toddler, dancing in his underwear and singing a song about being a "tough tootin' baby." Finn doesn't show any embarrassment about it, but he does discreetly shut the door to keep people from seeing it.
  • Giant Foot of Stomping: Jake turns into one of these to cap the beating Ash gets from Marceline and Finn.
  • Groin Attack: When Marceline learns that Ash has tampered with her memories, she walks up to him and kicks him square in the boingloings.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The same memory trick Ash tried to use on Marcie winds up being used by Finn to show her why she dumped Ash in the first place.
  • Jerkass: Ash, who manipulates Finn and Jake into removing a memory just so he can take Marceline as his girlfriend again.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: Finn and Jake to Marceline.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After selling Marceline's beloved childhood toy, putting a sleep spell on her and tricking Finn and Jake into erasing the memory of their breakup, Ash gets exactly what's coming to him as the three give him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: The background of the Fry Song is depicted. It's Marceline's dad eating her fries in the ruins of a diner, with Marceline being disappointed by him. No, there's no other context.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Finn, Jake and Marcie give one to Ash at the end of the episode. After Marceline kicks Ash in the boingloings, she and Finn start kicking him while he's down, then Jake turns into a giant foot and squashes Ash.
  • Resolved Noodle Incident: We find out the background for the Fry Song — as per the lyrics, it's Marceline's dad eating her fries.
  • Shout-Out: Jake's foot crushing Ash at the end is a Shout Out to the giant foot in Terry Gilliam's animations for Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Ash Gets Hungies at 8 o'clock

Ash tells Marceline that it's his dinnertime, and that she needs to get back in the kitchen and make him a turkey, tomato, and pickle sandwich. In response, Marceline kicks him in the boingloings, with Finn following suit in beating him up, ending in Jake's giant foot stomping on Ash.
