Jake is skeptical when Susan Strong requests his and Finn's help in reclaiming her people's home of Beautopia from the "lub-glubs".

Tropes

  • Body Horror: The Lub-Glubs are blackish creatures with long, skinny arms and teeth, but no visible mouth opening.
  • The Burlesque of Venus: Jake cracks a joke about being a "crazy clamshell" on Susan's "crazy cruise", and turns his head into a clam-shell with a beautiful woman inside.
  • Cowardly Lion: Susan notes herself to be this, especially when she fights the Lub-Glubs.
Susan: Susan scared! But Susan brave too...
  • Cuckoo Finger Twirl: Jake makes this gesture when trying to convince Finn that Susan is nuts and they shouldn't trust her.
  • Darker and Edgier: The tone is rather more ominous than other episodes, especially the confrontation with the Lub-Glubs.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: At one point, Susan uses Finn as a club to hit a Lub-Glub.
  • Killer Rabbit: The Lub-Glubs, hideous slime monsters disguised as innocent pool toys.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Finn asks Jake to make some hazelnut coffee, then randomly wonders what would happen if Jake changed his name to "Zulnut"
Finn: And then I would be like, "Hey, Zulnut!"
    Jake: That's terrible.
    Finn: Hey, Zulnut!
Jake: (playfully tackles Finn) Nooo! Stop!
  • The Load: Parodied; Jake says he's only coming along "to be distruptive and obnoxious".
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: The Lub-Glubs have multiple arms and are extremely hostile.
  • Not So Harmless: The Lub-Glubs turn out to be far more menacing than their float disguise lets on.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jake is horrified to see that Susan was right to worry about the Lub-Glubs, and he just pissed them off.
    Jake: Ooooh, Jakey beefed it!
  • Our Monsters Are Weird: The "Lub-Glubs" are black, lumpy, tentacled monsters that can disguise themselves as pool floats. The lead one is even more monstrous than rest, with multiple limbs and mouths.
  • Power of Trust: Jake slowly learns to trust Susan over the course of the episode.
  • Properly Paranoid: Jake in two ways; one, he thinks Susan's a fish person because she hasn't removed her hat and two, she and her people once attacked Candy Kingdom. It's understandable why it's hard for him to trust her at first.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Susan Strong".
  • Shout-Out:
    • Susan's description of fire as "red flower" is a reference to The Jungle Book.
    • Susan's "I'll be back" is said in the same tone as the T-800's in The Terminator.
  • Smashing Hallway Traps of Doom: The Clashing Gates that guard Beautopia.
  • Too Many Mouths: The lead Lub-Glub has multiple mouths.
  • The Unreveal: Finn appears to know whether Susan is human or not, but not the audience.
  • Weakened by the Light: The Lub-Glubs are destroyed by the light from the burning beacon at the center of Beautopia.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Finn suplexes a Lub-Glub.
