"1-Adam-12, 1-Adam-12, please respond to a 10-101 ... sighting of tropes seen in this episode":

  • Death of a Child: Strongly implied as to the fate of Cissy, a 4-year-old girl who was playing hide-and-seek with her babysitter, jumped in the pool (to "hide") and likely drowned. After Reed says he doesn't think Cissy will make it, Malloy bemoans the situation, sadly, with anger and disgust: "People die everyday, ADW, hit and run, murder. Most of the time we're involved. Somehow you learn to live with it. But, I'll tell you something, when it happens to a child, you never get used to it."
  • Mood Whiplash: Throughout the episode. The first 15 minutes or so involves routine calls — a high-speed chase, stopping a liquor store robbery and breaking up a fight (and taking a few bruises themselves) — along with light-hearted conversation between Reed and Malloy about how Reed and his wife are remodeling their home. That changes drastically with the final call: A loud party complaint that is tragically something else.
  • The Stoner: The woman who called in the loud party complaint thinks that the teenaged girl frantically knocking on the door and screaming for help is stoned out of her mind and possibly attempting a break-in.
