"Career Day Part 2" is the second half of the Season 3 Premiere of Abbott Elementary.

The two-parter cuts back to the present where Janine begins her new job as a school administrator by turning her Career Day Project into reality.


Tropes in this episode include:

  • As Himself: Philadelphia Eagles players Jalen Hurts, Brandon Graham, and Jason Kelce all appear over a video call during Career Day.
  • Big "YES!": Melissa is jubilated to know that she'll be housing a marketing professional who represents the Philadelphia Eagles.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Both Melissa and Gary are upset about the break-up, but they raise their heads high and leave on good terms with each other.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: Greggo tries to do this after Janine brings up the tarp incident.
  • Commitment Issues: While her boyfriend Gary is eager to take the next step to matrimony with his girl, Melissa makes it clear that she doesn't want to get married again.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Alex, one of Janine's new students, smiles and waves at her at the end of the day.
    • Greg mentions that he wanted to give Janine space after their talk 5 months ago.
  • Differing Priorities Break Up: Melissa ultimately breaks up with Gary because of his heart's desire of getting married which conflicts with her wanting to avoid being hitched.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Janine's Career Day turns out to be a success with her administrative team. Not only because of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts making a special guest appearance but also for the way that she improvised and worked with her issues without failing. And in the eyes of Manny, that was a huge win.
  • Exact Words: Melissa turns down Gary's ideas of marriage by saying that only a miracle can get her to change her mind. And when he sees the miraculous appearance of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, he takes it as a sign for him to pop the question.
  • Friend to All Children: Jalen Hurts goes along with the unprecedented guest appearance and is willing to meet with all the children at Abbott via video conference. He even gets Ms. Schemmenti's class to play Heads-Up Seven Up.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: After Janine suggests that they take a chance at their relationship again, Gregory gently turns her down claiming that he wanted to move on from that experience while also wanting to preserve their friendship.
  • I Just Want to Be You: Jacob personally requests to have Mr. Johnson come to his class for Career Day, citing his countless jobs and expertise as being something he admires of him.
  • In Medias Res: The story continues with Janine and her team holding Career Day at Abbott.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: In her most sincerest form possible, Janine points out that Gregory is the only person she knows who gets excited over radishes.
  • Kick the Dog: Ava can't help but point and laugh at Janine's face of annoyance after she was rebuked by Greggo.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • The botanist who visits Mr. Eddie's class mentions how he was stuck under a tarp while working on a summer-long project.
    • Mr. Johnson weaves a tale to Mr. Hill's class on how he got elected into the State Senate thanks to the death of a politician.
    • According to his teammates, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been asked to help out with public marriage proposals.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Janine is still working with the school district and Melissa has broken up with Gary.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Ava has her own bag of popcorn while watching surveillance tapes of Gregory refuting Janine's attempt at starting a romance. She also takes a moment to laugh at the camera crew for their losses.

  • Spy Cam: Principal Coleman reveals that she has secret cameras planted around the school so she can spy on her coworkers and thrive off their personal dramas like a telenovela.
  • The Stinger: Mr. Johnson is still rambling about his colorful past which has resulted in a large crowd of students and adults who are captivated by his tales. They even give him a standing ovation for his legacy.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Janine tries to write the date on top of the board, her substitute casually states that she likes her dates on the bottom and she likes to fight.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: By the power of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, Gary makes a wedding proposal broadcast to Melissa.
