Recap / A What If X Men Wedding Album

Go To

As Cyclops and Jean Grey finally tie the knot after several years, Uatu presents three tales depicting different marital outcomes for the bride.

''What if… Scott Summers and Jean Grey had married earlier?

Beast reunites with his old teammate Lorna, who ponders what took the happy couple so long to get married.

In this universe, the happy couple decided to cement their relationship at the same time Beast resigned to focus on his research. As a result, the rest of the X-Men also decided to leave, forcing Xavier to assemble an All New, All Different X-Men.

  • Breaking the Fellowship, with Beast, Cyclops and Marvel Girl on the way out, the others decide that they’re grown up now and leave.
  • Downer Ending: Xavier and his new team die on Krakoa, with Scott and Jean lamenting that they could’ve prevented this tragedy by not leaving.
  • Non-Protagonist Resolver: The threat of Krakoa is eventually dealt with by the Avengers and Sunfire.

What if Scott Summers and Jean Grey had Never Fallen in Love at all?

As Warren Worthington laments missing his chance with the bride, Uatu shows a universe where she went for the more outgoing Angel over the meek Cyclops.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: The crux of the story.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Jean and Warren become just as stable a couple as the regular Jean with Scott, and Hank McCoy is named leader of the X-Men. But a bitter Cyclops leaves his Parental Substitute on bad terms, and is recruited by Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for Magneto’s services.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Scott’s close-minded personality, without Jean to temper it, leads him to become a raging jackass who Xavier easily dismisses as unsuitable for leadership.
  • Leader Wannabe: Scott sees himself as the most focused and worthy to lead the X-Men. But he ends up failing Xavier’s Secret Test of Character, resulting in Beast claiming the role.
  • Married to the Job: This version of Scott has nothing besides being an X-Man, and being rejected for leadership causes him to Rage Quit.

What if Phoenix had Fallen for Wolverine?

Because did you really think they wouldn’t do a story to this effect?

As Jubilee and Rogue lament that Logan hasn’t shown up for the wedding, with the man himself watching from the nearby woods, Uatu shows a world where he managed to get together with Jean… or rather, the Phoenix assuming Jean’s appearance.

  • Downer Ending: During the fight with the Shi’ar for Jean’s survival, Jean loses control from stress, causing Phoenix to go berserk and destroy the universe.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Scott sees “Jean” making out with Logan and gives up on her.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Phoenix is still brainwashed into Black Queen by Mastermind, and the Dark Phoenix saga plays out mostly the same.
  • Mood Whiplash: From the universe dying at the hands of the Phoenix to Scott and Jean of the 616 continuity getting their happy ending.
  • Mythology Gag: The ending to the story is similar to issue 28 of the original What If? run.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Since Wolverine isn’t as much of a calming influence to Jean as Scott was, she fully loses control and kills everyone.
  • Point of Divergence: Since he isn’t in a relationship with Phoenix, Scott pays no mind to her Jumping Off the Slippery Slope.
