Watching this show is like someone forcing you to pick up the check at the Anxious Clown.

The Baudelaires are stunned to find Aunt Josephine's suicide note, but quickly find everything about the circumstances highly suspicious.

Tropes:

  • Calling the Old Man Out: Violet delivers one to Aunt Josephine.
Violet: We're all afraid. We were afraid when you brought home Count Olaf; we were afraid when we though you had jumped out a window; we were afraid to give ourselves allergic reactions; we were afraid to steal a sailboat; and we were afraid to make our way across Lake Lachrymose in the middle of a hurricane. But that didn't stop us!
  • Contrived Coincidence: The plane flies over Lake Lachrymose at just the right time; it, and the binoculars being used by one of its occupants, are placed in exactly the right position to refract the lighthouse's rays into the magnifying glass. Not that it ultimately mattered, since the ferry was right there.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: Olaf kills Aunt Josephine by gently pushing her into the lake full of bloodthirsty leeches.
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: The Baudelaires pull a Screw This, I'm Out of Here! when they realize that Mr. Poe will never be able to stop Count Olaf as he's too weak and too dumb, (since he refused to believe that Captain Sham was really Olaf on their word alone) so they quietly sneak onto a truck to the Lucky Smells Lumbermill while nobody's watching.
