From the film:

Parents who have children, children who have relatives, relatives who have cousins and cousins who have mothers in law! See what ugly crime was made in the province of Cuenca by two thieves, around eight o'clock!
Blind beggar, first lines

About the film:

Having seen the film it is much more than a denounce of guards, tortures, it is absolutely not that. It is a testament of the times in which we see that the political power (Cuenca's conservative deputy, Fernando Rey), the judicial power (local judge, Héctor Alterio) and the ecclesiastical power (Luis Vivó, a better actor by the day) have decided to punish the people of Ossa [sic]. It is not a clumsy confrontation between guards/people, but a satanic and mediocre political maneuver [...] Civilians versus civilians. Administration versus administered. The almost always stuff.
Francisco Umbral, "Pilar's Crime"
