I can't tell you about [the Steinway Nursing Home], though. My mom told me not to. But Chelsea keeps bugging me to spill it. And if I don't let Ashley in on it, she won't tell me what she thinks about Giovanni. I see her sneaking peeks at him. So, I jot down some of the juicy parts and slip notes both ways down the aisles to Chelsea and Ashley.
Don't ever underestimate a beautiful teacher, one that looks like a fairy godmother, even if she does act like a poet. In a flash she snaps up those notes like they were string beans. My head drops way down to the desk. But my eyes watch her. She reads the notes! She doesn't say a word, though. Math comes and goes and then reading. All the while the clock strikes a beat, "You're in troub-le! You're in troub-le!"

Ashley isn't working, though. She sits with her head leaning on her hand. Her face is flushed. What's going on? Did she and Gio have a fight? There's only one way to find out. I can't help myself. I write a note.
But Ms. Hill has her radar out. I am caught red-handed with the note between my knees.
"That's ENOUGH! This is the SECOND time!" Ms. Hill raises her voice. It frightens me. "Focus your attention on your work and not on the gossip column!"
